No injuries reported, fire is out now and ship is underway.

Apparently the tail of the ship was struck by lightning about 20 miles off the coast of Eleuthera on Friday around 3pm causing the initial flames, until a portion fell onto Deck 10 causing the fire to rapidly spread. Fire burned for about 2.5 hours. Once it was fully extinguished they have changed course, reporting no structural or operational damage.

On our first family cruise in Dec. of ‘17, we cruised on the Carnival Valor. There was another Carnival ship, the Triumph, that was doing/mirroring our same itinerary (Costa Maya, Cozumel, Belize).
At Costa Maya, some folks from the Triumph were on a bus for an excursion to tour Mayan ruins. The driver lost control, and the bus rolled over, killing 5 passengers from the Triumph, 3 from the same family.
We later found out that the bus driver was intoxicated. Very sad, to say the least.

On our last cruise on the Carnival Dream in December, we visited their private island, Half Moon Cay.
There was a family of 16 from our ship there celebrating their fathers 1st year anniversary of being married to his new wife, and his recent retirement.
They were all in the water at one point. He went back to his beach chair to take a break. When the rest of the family returned, he was unresponsive.
We were 3 hours late leaving the island that night, but it wasn’t about us.

Sometimes, stuff happens.
As so many people are on these huge boats these days, I’m actually surprised sad events don’t happen more often.

On a side note, I’ve seen a coupla’ Love Boat episodes on cable TV lately.
Early in both episodes, a passenger was lost trying to find their stateroom, because “the ship is so big“…the Love Boat is a mere dinghy compared to the cruise ships of today…!!!!! :hilarious:

Just providing an update, Carnival cancelled the 3/25 and 3/29 sailings on the Freedom, and issued full refunds and 100% FCCs to those impacted (fair, but still that's gotta be rough for those who just lost their spring break plans)

As @Dead2009 pointed out, this same funnel had a fire in 2022. The "Whale Tail" fin wasn't replaced until just this past October. Very unlucky circumstances indeed.

Carnival, for all their faults, should be commended for how quickly and efficiently they handled this incident. Fires aboard ships are no joke, and this one was handled with zero injuries.
