After we wrap up our week-long WDW stay on 2/12 (want to avoid the Presidents Day weekend crowds), we'll not be flying out of Orlando until Sun 2/14.

So help me by recommending places to stay / things to do that Friday & Saturday where President's day crowds won't be a pain. Family of 4, two boys 6 & 8.

Close-in or further out (no more than a 2 hr drive); active or mellow - I'm open to all suggestions.

Or is there a secret way to avoid crowds & enjoy Presidents Day Weekend at WDW :p?

How about taking an hr. drive to Cocoa Beach. Get a hotel for two nights, spend the day at the beach, go to Ron Jons surf shop for some shopping, then finish the day by getting a great seafood meal. The next day you could head over to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaviral which is about a 15 min. drive from Cocoa and have some fun taking a tour and enjoying the other attractions there. Then the day you fly out you will have about a 45 min. drive to the airport but hopefully you would have had a wonderful weekend to finish off your trip. :)

I almost forgot you can also see the Disney Magic and Wonder as they are docked in the cape and watch them sail through the channel on their way off to sea.
BTW there are some great seafood restaurants lining the channel where the cruise and other big ships pass.
I would ask the front desk of the the Hotel you choose where and when the boats are expected to come in and their favorite eating establishment. I received some great tips last time I was down there, unfortunatley I forgot the name of the restaurant where I had an amazing dinner with the best Clam Chowder Ever! :slurp:

Central Orlando (WDW, SeaWorld and Universal) will be a nightmare - you're best heading out of town - to the beaches/Miami etc etc as has been suggested

A trip to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaviral is a nice day. I remember going there almost 20 years ago when I was 6. We stopped off there on our way to WDW after a short cruise on the Big Red Boat. Your boys would love it.

Busch Gardens in Tampa is a really nice park. We have not been there in a few years but when we have gone we have good time. Kennedy Space center is very nice to. My kids 10yr old girl and 18yr old boy love to go there. Take the bus tour, it is amazing.

Since the Daytona race would be that Sunday, the East Coast traffic may very well be a nightmare. I think I'd head for Tampa, maybe do a Gulf coast beach and Busch Gardens.

If that is race weekend, stay away from Daytona. Port Canaveral (where the boats leave) should be fine that weekend. Depends if any fishing tournaments are going on out of the port. Discovery Cove is a good idea, but when the races are going on, even traffic in orlando is bad. st pete in the tampa area is really nice.

Just hang out in the park(s) without feeling like you have to do anything or be in a hurry.
Sometimes we do that on our last day.
It's nice- sort of 'stop and smell the roses' and observe.

Good luck.

agreed, anything during that weekend is going to be a mess. add 2 more days to your passes and just relax and explore the world. maybe a resort/monorail tour. pirate adventure at the resorts. slowly go throught the WS. walk the trails at DAK.

a week is never enough time to see everything.

I did not know that it was possible to finish WDW :ROFLOL:

Seems I can NEVER get enough of it and am already planning my next trip on the plane ride home from the current trip.
