Nah, you're not going crazy  The movie posters/promotional posters had almost the exact same image as shown, except the bottom of the poster had pirates climbing over a mound of gold and Barbossa was holding a skull, not his beard. Why they removed the skull is beyond me.
I found one thing interesting about this. When Pirates got its PG-13 rating, I noticed that almost all references to Walt Disney Pictures had been removed. I noticed it because I found it odd. The website removed WDP and just kept Jerry Bruckeimer productions. Only at the bottom of the movie poster in the credits was WDP mentioned. And then in the actual movie, there was no "castle" WDP beginning, you had to stay to the end of the movie to see that. I almost got the impression they were trying to be cautious of relating a PG-13 movie with the Disney name. However, as can be plainly seen on the DVD cover, WDP is right on the top in bright yellow. In fact, it was the first thing I noticed. I guess making almost $300 million (and it should reach that by the end of its run) at the BO and becoming the 2nd best movie of the summer (behind Nemo) brings a certain pride to a company
