Is the sitting just like Indian jones where you get in line and sit where directed or do you absolutely need fast pass

You don't need a Fastpass. You walk up to the seating with the rest of the crowd and you may or may not be directed where to sit. The first time I saw it we were ushered to our bench by a CM, second we sat wherever we wanted, or rather wherever was free.

And if I were you, I wouldn't worry about trying to sit right up front. It's not worth it. A month ago I sat closer to the front and when the mist screens happened I was constantly assaulted by a very strong mist. Really annoying.

Thank you will not waste a fast pass for this I will save it for another ride
Another tip being, go to the second showing if it is showing twice that night as it should be less crowded and try to get there early if you want to guarantee a good seat. So yeah, no FP necessary :)

A lot of times, after you've used up your 3, you can go to a kiosk and get an additional FP for Fantasmic. No guarantee, but worth a try after you've used up your first 3.

Do the dinner package if it works with your trip. I tried it out this past Friday. It's like a FP but doesn't count towards your three. Also, the seats are in the middle and you won't have to wait in a super long line. On the other hand if there is a second showing just go to that one, it will be less crowded and you won't need to buy an expensive dinner anymore.

We arrived to the show about 10 minutes before start and sat 3 rows up. After reading all of the folks in the forum saying "don't sit in the front rows - you'll get wet", I was a little worried for my 4 year old. It was a hot September day and honestly, we LOVED the front row. He enjoyed the show. The mist was very refreshing and the view was great. Personal preference I guess.
