I have not been there to see the show, but I read in a Disneyland guidebook this year that the best seats are on the water front, and it also said that the balcony can only accomadate 20 guests and the price for viewing it up there is $47, plus you must reserve it sometime in advance. Again, only what I've read and not an actual experience, but maybe that can help you out.

We did both last October-you are served a dessert buffet (balcony) or a dessert box (ground level) both were great. You must call early to get your reservation (they take your credit card number to reserve) as there are limited seats-Balcony was harder to get and in my opinion I preferred sitting closer to the action. The Balcony has a couple of rows of seating but to get a good unobstructed view you need to be one of the first 10 or so people to call since your seat is assigned in the order you purchase your tickets. If I recall correctly, the ground level were seated by the order you checked in-they recommended about an hour prior to show time. They assign you a number (for your group) and when it is called they allow you to select your seats before they let the next bunch in. Best seats are at the far end along the rail. It was a little difficult juggling a beverage and the dessert box since there are no tables.

Just get there early and reserve your seats with humans. Do not leave something to mark your spot. It will be moved/stolen. Just switch off who watches the seats. And have the others ride a ride. There are so many good ones in that area.
