"Family Fun Weekends" Coming to Disneyland

Today the Disney Parks Blog announced new Family Fun Weekends coming to Disneyland from January 14 to March 6. The weekend events will be made up of five different experiences:

• Fiesta Disneyland
• Kickin' Country Weekend
• Character Fan Days
• Lunar New Year Festival
• Mardi Gras!

Disney is asking guests to vote for the characters they'd like to see during Character Fan Days:

For the first time ever, we’re giving you a chance to decide which rarely seen Disney characters you want to see in Disneyland park. Starting today, you can cast your vote in polls that can be found only on the Disneyland Facebook page, and those votes will determine which characters appear during our new Character Fan Days Jan. 28 through 30. The Characters Fan Days weekend is one of five, family-fun events coming to Disneyland park Jan. 14 through March 6 as part of “Family Fun Weekends.”

To vote, look for three polls on Facebook spanning three days, Jan. 7 through Jan. 9. Each poll will appear at 2 p.m. PT and will feature different characters – some you see often and some you don’t. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the characters included in the poll: the Seven Dwarfs, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, Clarabelle Cow and the Country Bears.

The top two vote-getters from each day’s poll will appear in the Festival Arena in Disneyland park Jan. 28 through 30 during the all-new Character Fan Days (sorry – no write-ins accepted).

The Disney Parks Blog has released additional information on these new events, including dates and brief descriptions for each:

Do you like fiestas, hoedowns, Mardi Gras, Lunar New Year and Disney Characters? Then you won’t want to miss the next eight weekends at Disneyland park. We’re calling them “Family Fun Weekends” and they run Jan. 14 through March 6.

Families know they can find magic and excitement whenever they visit Disneyland Resort, and the next eight weekends will offer a special reason to play at Disneyland park.

“Family Fun Weekends” are themed events that invite guests to enjoy music, dancing, and special food and merchandise, along with a chance to meet and take photos with some Disney characters in specially themed attire. This weekend, for example, Fiesta Mickey and Minnie Mouse will greet you at Festival Arena in colorful, folklorico attire.

This is a novel way to try and distract folks from realizing there is no parade this winter at Disneyland. :lol:

Some of these themes have more potential for fun than others, it seems. The Mardi Gras thing could be huge, with New Orleans Square as a backdrop.

But Lunar New Year? That's going to leave a majority of folks who aren't Chinese scratching their heads at what the significance is, or why they should care.

Still, the attempt to stage these mini events over the winter during the rehab of Main Street pavement and prep for the Soundsational parade is a noble effort on TDA's part.

What a fun thing for Disneyland to do! Especially letting the local fans vote online and then revealing the results within days. I bet this is the start of a new winter tradition for Anaheim. I didn't vote, but I have an interest in going to see King Louie and Baloo, since I love the soundtrack from the Jungle Book.

I was also glad to see that the Mardi Gras events will take up three full weekends from mid February to early March, and be staged in New Orleans Square. We'll have to see what they do here, but I'm also sensing a new tradition for Disneyland brewing.
