Extra Magic Hours Question

I was wondering how the evening EMH worked because I will be going in June and staying offsite. How do they get the people out of the park that don't get the EMH? Can you stay if you don't stay at a WDW Resort?

They ask for your room key every time you attempt to board an attraction. In theory, someone without a room key who was in the park before regular closing could walk around, shop, and eat, but would not be able to get on any attractions.

And yes, the CM's are quite diligent about checking room keys.

Last time I went (2008) they had designated areas where you had to line up and have your Key To The World card scanned by a CM. Then they gave you a bracelet that all the CMs looked for while boarding rides. You can definitely walk around and still shop if you are staying off property, but I don't think you'll be able to get on any rides.

Wristbands have been gone for some time now. All you do is show your room key at the entrance to each attraction.

I wonder why they went away from the wristbands? Every time we are at EMH the cast members never check for the date on the room key. They barely even look at the keys. Seems like wristbands would have been more effective at keeping non resort guests out of the queues.

Cost-cutting.

It cost money to supply the wristbands and assign CMs to check rooms keys and give them out. Now, the room key check is done by CMs who were on-duty anyway at the entrance to the queues.

I think it also had to do with theft.

There were many sites that advocated the "tip" of going to Party City or another such party supply store and buying packs of colored wrist bands. Then when you saw what the color for the night was going to be, you just put the matching one on. I in fact watched a family do that right in front of me once.

Checking the room key at each queue eliminates that "tip"

Yep the wirst bands were gone the last couple of times I was at Disney and now they just look to see if you have a room card. No one really checked to see if it was an active card so I would think any card would do.

Any one want to buy some used cards?? LOL.

It depends on the attraction or the CM from my experience. I've seen ones that barely look at it on less popular attractions all the way up to a CM at Pirates checking the cards one by one with a flashlight. So it really all depends.

I believe that you will still get a key to the world card when you check in because you can still charge items "to your room". I believe that the card is needed to access the comfort stations at the resort as well.

CMs are definitely on the ball. Hell they even assign another CM to Astro during EMH just for this job. Usually if it's obvious you're in a family they usually accept just the one. However, it is funny to watch everyone fumble around for their cards when they realise they actually need them.

And the reaction of some people to this outrageous deal being for Disney guests can be equally amusing (and aggressive!).

I find card checking to be incredibly hit or miss. Most of the time the CM's at the front just glance to make sure there is a KTTW card. A lot of times they don't care if everyone has one as long as someone in the group does. Only once since they have gone to card checking has a CM actually inspected my card to make sure that it was still valid. While what he did was probably the way they are expected to do it, it did back things up considerably to just get into the queue.

Don't you guys feel guilty being in the park when your not supposed to be! It's a special thing for Resort guests! Lol just kidding, but at first, I would feel a little guilty about almost "cheating" lol but thats just me. But I always stay on property!

They do check the cards and be glad they do. It kept a crowd of 20 people from cutting in front of us during Epcot EMH. This was at the Mexico pavilion, I know not a sought after ride but my two year old loved it and I was a little angry :mad:when they all barged past us (in matching shirts) to the ride CM. When they started to walk past him he asked them for their room cards. They gave the we don't understand face. So he explained in a language they could understand and they all left. However we showed our room keys and were graciously allowed to pass. Yes, when he denied them access I did the Tiger Woods fist pump inside.:sohappy:

Anyways he could have let them go because boats were running almost empty but it was a perk we were paying for that they were not. So I am glad that the CMs are doing their jobs.
