They are basically enclosures that you put any sata drive into and they make one large drive...they can be networked, run via USB or Firewire. Pretty fast and far more reliable than a cheap external. Of course they are a bit pricey depending on the size you get..but I say worth it.

I can also highly recommend online storage solutions such as Dropbox or SugarSync (even Flickr if you so please). They of course are only as fast as your internet connection, but they do offer a nice level of security of securing your data, and most have interfaces for all OS's and cell phones for "anywhere" access to your things.

I treat my SD cards like film negatives and never reuse them. I figure it to cost about 10 cents per image (~25MB RAWs) which is still waaaay less than I paid for film and processing back in the day.

Unfortunately my new camera uses the more expensive Compact Flash format so that isn't really a great option anymore. I may look into an online cloud-based storage solution such as Amazon Web Services.
