hi! i'm new to the forum and i have a question. i've read and heard about shipping food to yourself at your resort as a method of saving $$$ on meals and i wondered if anyone has ever done this. if so, what was the result? we are spending a week at the end of june at the pop century resort and would like to have breakfast and possibly lunch at our hotel since we plan on doing the "afternoon nap/pool" break. since we are traveling with a 2 young and VERY picky eaters, i thought this might be a good option. also we are considering using the disney meal plan but are concerned this would be a waste of $$ because of the picky eaters, etc.
any comments/recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I've never done it, but keep in mind you'd need to rent a fridge for $10 a day, so that adds up to $70 for just the fridge.

If you're flying, spend a few bucks for a towncar to pick you up at the airport. Most do a complimentary grocery stop on the way to your hotel at a regular chain grocery store (no gift shop mark-up). When I do value resorts with my young kids, I find that the limo/grocery stop/fridge rental makes up for itself in breakfasts/snacks, etc. Not everything has to be refridge immediately. I always get a case of bottled water, some sodas and juices. Bread, peanut butter, pretzels, goldfish, etc. The fridge gets jelly, milk, cheese, fruit. Remember they groc stop can also be used for laundry soap, diapers, and other things to make packing lighter.

I have always used www.tiffanytowncar.com with good results. Their website has a coupon!

I have had clients that have done this. Address the package to the resort and in the bottom left hand corner put your name and your check in date. They will hold the package there for you. Instead of a pricey refridge, take advantage of the free 30 minute grocery stop that our transportation sponsor Quick Silver offers and get a styrofoam ice chest for next to nothing and keep it filled with the free ice you can get at the resort to keep things cold. Please keep in mind that they do not charge extra for a car seat or a booster.

Can you ship anything to the resort? We were thinking of driving to a nearby beach for a day and would like to bring a surfboard. It doesn't weigh much because it's small but the thought of lugging it through the airport makes me want to change my mind. Do you think I could ship this to the resort and have them hold it even though it is not a box? Oh, but then how do I ship it back? Hmmmm?

We also utilize a town car service and make a grocery stop. We have used Happy Limo several times and they are fantastic. I also have very picky eaters and PB & J is a great way to save money & make the picky eaters happy! Plus, it saves a bunch by buying bottled water, juice boxes, snacks for the kids and cereal. :slurp:

As for the meal plan, I think it may still be worth it since it is only $10 (I think) for kids and they have PB&J, pizza, and chicken fingers at most eateries. As for the buffets, they usually also have several kid friendly choices--even for my picky eaters. :hammer:

I have never shipped food to the resort and I am really not sure how cost effective it would be since many of the items could be heavy & will be pricey to ship.

I can sympathize with you, we have picky eaters as well, plus one of our children is tube fed and needs Pediasure, so we have shipped food to the resort in advance. This has always worked well for us (one year UPS was a little rough on our box and some crackers got smashed, but otherwise was fine). There is a chart on the UPS website that tells you how long it takes for a package to arrive at its destination so timing has never been a problem. This year we will actually be doing both, shipping a box of supplies and making a stop at a grocery store for perishables (that you Quicksilver, to plug a site sponsor). It's one of the best tricks that we use to save ourselves time, hassle, and money. Here's a list of the things that we ship:

Cereal Bars (one thing our picky eaters will eat)
Juice boxes
Crackers (although we need to learn to pack them on the inside of the box)
Pediasure
Diapers
Change for the laundry machine
Wipes
Other misc. food products (may not be necessary with our stop this year)
One extra piece of luggage

The last one is my favorite. We always end up leaving with more than we came with, and the extra bag really comes in handy for souvenirs. I would say to go for it! It’s not hard to do, and it has been a real life saver for us. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me!
Hope that helped!

This is one reason I always like to pack Diapers in my suitcase--I know I will have a lot of extra room for souveniers when we return home  This year, I only have on ein pull-ups at night so I am going to have to plan accordingly & pack an extra bag! :D

thanks to one and all for the advice. it has certainly helped--
i'm think that we are probably going to do the shipping thing and the meal plans as well. we are staying on-site and using the disney magical express for airport transfer which therefore will not allow for a grocery stop so the shipping thing i think will work great for light breakfast items, juice boxes and snack items. also, the extra piece of luggage is genious!
thanx again!
