Hi. I'm hoping someone here can help me.

I'm having an issue connecting to the internet on my laptop via Ethernet. I've already determined that it is not the cable. I've been on the Chat with HP technical support and we've done a driver reinstall and bios update, and neither worked. Does anyone have any ideas before I take it to Best Buy?

StarWars: what is exactly the problem? does it not get IP address? does it not even connect? does the led turn on at least?

Please note that both USB ports and Ethernet ports do die a lot (in my experience ) when your electrical service as no good ground or offers unreliable service (brownouts, cuts, overloads..etc..)
These ports usually DIE completely or seem to turn on but not work.

@Cesar R M The light does not go on and it does not connect. Should I take it to Best Buy? It's under warranty

Before going to bestbuy, ensure the Ethernet is enabled in the laptop as well.
most laptops have a software to "disable" certain parts of the laptop. (my dell XPS for example, as a button that shows a panel to enable disable wifi, keyboard light..etc..)
If its still no go, do what Yoda says.

Are you positive that you have signal before the cable? If so then I would take it in.
Yes. It just stopped working. The wireless connection is fine and I borrowed a cable from a school computer that connected just fine to their computers, but my laptop won't connect. I'm going to go take it in; I'm at school and there's a Best Buy two minutes from here.

By the way, can you connect anything else to the same cable and port?

Just to discard the possibility that the router might have a burned port.

But yes, ports shouldn't die that often.. guarantee it is!

I suggest you make a backup of your important stuff, sometimes the staff of major companies of repair.. MAY reinstall everything without backing up your data.

I tried several cables and it didn't work. I'm at Best Buy and they said it's most likely a hardware issue. Minimum: 3 days. Maximum: 2 weeks. Lovely. Guess I'll be using my brother's laptop until then!

If there is no guarantee, you can always buy a USB to Ethernet adapter.

That's good know. I didn't know those existed. My tablet only has USB, so that might actually be good. But it's under warranty, so either it will get fixed or replaced. They said I'll have a diagnosis tomorrow. And thankfully I had 3 flash drives on me, 2 8 GBs and one 6 GB, so I got everything I need off of it. In the meantime, I'll work on the Surface. I'll update you once I know what's wrong

no I mean, an ethernet card that works via USB.
so if they cannot fix your damaged ethernet port, you use one of the USB ports and use it as a ethernet one.

Well, if they can't fix it, the computer will get replaced since it's less than 1 year old, but that's still good to know for future reference

I took it in, and evidently they ran a diagnostic program on it which automatically fixed it. Working quite smoothly now
