Here's a little New Years Eve recap with pics from Epcot from yours truly.

I got to the park just after a lovely 7am EST. Ran like the dickens from the International Gateway over to Soarin to get a ride before the crowds made it impossible and found the park pretty-much empty.

Whoo hoo, resort guest perks like the Extra Magic Hours at 7am do come in handy! That wouldn't last though. After a short flight on Soarin' we trekked over to Test Track and since it was playing the "This vehicle testing facility is currently experiencing technical difficulties..." speil we decided to grab a few FP's and just wander until our time came around.

So, wander we did...

Things got nastey over at Spaceship Earth pretty quickly once the park actually opened to day guests at 8am. Crowds just started to flow into the park. On a normal day Epcot does not use it's parking lot beyond a few sections - today it filled the entire parking lot (using both trams lines) and closed it.

So plentiful numbers of guests streamed in past Spaceship Earth all through the morning and afternoon until the parking lot went kaput.

s1se1.jpg

From what I saw, Spaceship Earth peaked at around a 75min wait. The ride moves around 2,200 guests an hour. The queue used the entire hard queue, a soft switchback running the length of the east side of the building and then another soft extension along the west length that was exceeded and the line began to back up into Innoventions plaza.

This photo shows the "Your wait is ... from here." sign at the end of the west extension. It says 60mins, but there's about 15mins beyond it.

s1se2.jpg

In other Spaceship Earth news - pieces and parts for the new postshow (and possibly other work on the attraction) could be seen backstage when guests were detoured into backstage during and after the 7:30pm showing of Illuminations. The walkway connected a walkway by China's bridge and one near Mexico to the service road that runs around Epcot, past the Cast Services building (and the backside of Norway and Mexico), the old SSE's trellis metal statue at the CM bus loop, then under Test Track's outer-loop (right past TT's vehicle repair shop) to re-enter the park between Test Track and M:S.

Nothing amazingly special was on display, just lots of metal and sheet goods, but they were interestingly enough labeled "Starship Earth."

Oh, and in Epcot's Entertainment services warehouse there was a big interesting shiny metal gold looking swirly something or another. Just think big brushed metal swirlies and you get the idea. Probably just decor for events and such.

Back during daylight hours and in the park.. It got crowded. Someone told me that even though Epcot only closed parking and didn't reach physical capacity like MK, it still had more people for NYE. I wonder if that's true. Certainly felt like tons of people.

I made a loop around World Showcase to escape the crowds at one point - without much luck. The American Adventure was completely full. The Voices of Liberty were inviting guests to scoot as far in to them as possible on the rotunda floor to allow room for other people in the preshow area.

Over in France, Impressions de France ran to a full house. I've never seen the preshow completely full of people wall-to-wall standing room only. More like wiggle room only actually, could barely breath in there. They were running around try to find seats for people in the last seconds before the film started.

Then we went to cross the bridge from France in the UK...

ws1.jpg

Run away! Run away!

Too many people. That's the path from the UK leading to Canada. I kinda decided it was at that point I wasn't really going to get to enjoy very many attractions in the park. Even the films in World Showcase were starting to become difficult to get into.

Back in Future World, we slept on the floor of "southern" Innoventions West. It's the empty hallway behind the Fountainview Espresso and Bakery (which was open all day! Whoo hoo!) that is sometimes used for special events shopping places. It's air conditioned, large, and has carpeting. Better then camping outside in the heat on the grass like hundreds of others. One girl I saw got the best spot - she crashed out on the giant easy chair in the Pooh meet/greet in the UK.

After being awakened a few times by the people unloading into our peaceful hallway from Character Connection (the character meet/greet in what used to be an Italian Restaurant next to the Foutainview) we wandered out to see how the world was doing. Nemo was getting ugly.

There in the distance is The seas with Nemo and Friends - note the large line extending from the building and across the bridge toward me as I take the photo...

nemo1.jpg

And then notice the line curving around the side entrance to Innoventions West..

nemo2.jpg

Oh, and look, there is it, smack dab in the middle of the West breezeway with its little uniformed CM's trying to keep the kaos at a minimum. Look, you can see the window-dressings for the Character Connection on the right and if you look really hard, you can probably see someone sleeping on the floor in the hallway back there.

I hope DL's subs have lots and lots of extra stantion poles ready to be setup for they open their ride. And speaking of long lines... El Rio del Tiempo. Who knew?

elrio.jpg

You'd think they were giving away free tortillas or something. I wonder if after the makeover to 3 Cabs the line will always be this long. The pretty woman in the dress is directing people to the queue on the left side of the temple - rather then through the doors into the plaza where the shops and restaurant and normal entrance to the ride are.

The line switchbacks a few times right there infront of the temple, then goes around the side, into a side entrance of the foyer, past the mexican wood carvers, down the ramp, along the left side of the pavilion past the shops, then into more switchbacks erected infront of the San Angel restaurant, before going into the hard queue switchbacks that lead down to the loading area.

Wow.. folks deserve a free tortilla for going through all that just to see El Rio del Tiempo. Can't wait to see Donald on the ride come April.

Long lines abounded. At once point you couldn't tell which line was for HISTA and which line was for Journey into Imaignation as they became a mess infront of the Imagination building. Journey got up to like 45minutes.

Over in East Future World, Universe of Energy wrapped around the fountain and started creeping up the ramp into the Wonder of Life. At it's peak, it held a 3-show wait (roughly 30mins.)

Inside Wonders of Life, decent sized crowds formed midday, though they waned at times and were gone by the evening. Body Wars held a queue midday and managed to extend beyond the 2 dermatropic decontamination chambers which is roughly 30-45 minutes. A lot of that is probably a direct result of Energy's line and unload (which tends to point people right into Wonders).

Night time! Several stages were setup around the park. In Future World West they used the Cyber Groove stage that faces toward the Land/Seas pavilions and had some nie special effects including floating planets and bubble effects - and Tapestry Puppet dancers!

tap.jpg

At the Fount of Nations they set up the big main stage with a DJ. Behind it, Spaceship Earth had a laser-image clock from after the first Illuminations until the NYE countdown. The whole big courtyard there became a big dancefloor. No bubbles or anything though.

stage.jpg

China had a very cool setup.

chin1.jpg

The area infront of the Temple of Hope (i think that's its name) had an awesome lighting rig that had fire pots mounted atop it. Every so often with the music they would fire off and shoot huge plumes of synchronized flame into the sky. A nice chinese style dragon hung over the dancefloor.

chin2.jpg

Over in Italy they went with a nice modern sorta feel. Very nice lighting effects.

ital1.jpg

The area was pretty packed, and it really shined out well across the whole lagoon giving a nice show.

ital2.jpg

There was also a Latin dance floor setup at the American Garden theater, where they essentially converted the stage into a dance floor with some sorta "small world" style latin decor. It was cute and people seemed to really enjoy it, as it was packed. No photo, sorry.

As far as Illuminations and NYE - it was awesome. Had a full show of Illuminations, and then the final countdown began. Each country which had celebrated the New Year already had fireworks behind their pavilion with music in the proper order. Like a minute or so each. Then the big giant boom for Canada, Mexico and the USA - the 10, 9, 8, etc.. countdown was a series of shots encircling the pavilions. It was nice to see them incorporating the pavilions moreso then Illuminations currently does. It was pretty amazing.

Well, that's it for me and NYE at Epcot :)

Your pictures and updates are, as always, appreciated Merf! Thanks so much for taking the time to share with us. :) Sounds like it was quite a blast! (other than the crowds...) I LOVE that picture of the bubbles with the tapestry puppets!!

Thats for the update!

I hope they get that Nemo line under control. The queue shouldn't be allowed to just run away like that causing complete chaos. They should be able to make temporary switchbacks in front of the ride keeping cutting to a minimum, and also establishing-control of the queue.

I believe I was told at one point that Epcot had a greater capacity than that of MK, so even if EPCOT did not reach capacity (which I was there as well and it certainly felt like it did) it probably had more people than a full MK. I thought it was neat to see the arrow signs driving in and for MK seeing "FULL" instead of an arrow. Just nothing ive seen before, so very neat. Awesome Pics. Italy, in my opinion, had the best stage and music.

I wish someone had gotten a pic of that sign. I know it can change, and have seen it change before, and the friend I was with for NYE knows about it and has always wanted to see it - but alas, we were in Epcot at 7am :P

THe capacity of the two parks is a somewhat hotly contested issue... mostly because there have been points in the parks' history where each was larger (after they both existed that is). As of current numbers, I believe MK is slightly higher, but not by an excessive number. Now, physical space, Epcot certainly can physically fit more people. But, it will phase well before that.

Regardless of this, both parks have very large capacities, as do the other two. Therefore, we are talking good things for Disney as a whole, especially considering that not everyone on property goes to a park NYE.

Hey Merf... we were there all day as well, but arrived at 8:30 am. After getting FP for Soarin, we talked onto nemo... about 9am... waited for MS "Normal Version" about 30, received FP for TT for 9:30 at night (received the FP somewhere around 11am), and walked on El Rio del Tempo at about 11am. These crowds seemed consistent with the previous 3 times we have stayed at EPCOT for NYE. Line was about a 10 min wait for Journey later in the night say about 10pm, and SSE line was down to about 30-40mins at that time. We also took the walk from "Norway" backstage to TT after the 7:30pm Fireworks show. There appeared to be CMs every 20 feet along the way. We must have said "Happy New Year" about 30 times back to the CM's. It was fun to get a glimpse backstage, other than at 60MPH when you are on the outside loop of TT.

To those reading the thread, this is definitely "over the top" - usually reserved to Crowds for NYE and 7/4's during the year.

As a followup mid-morning, CC in WOL pavilion was playing to only 30% crowds... and the pavilion appeared to only have a smattering of people in it. I did not peek in at the BW queue, but it did not make it out "visibly" to the pavilion interior when we were there.

We never had to crash in all 15+ hours, but saw that many people did. I might have walked around you in the hallway during mid-day.

Hints to future "serious duration" visitors for next years NYE, or other holiday events:

1) Rent a locker... hold your stuff in there, don't bother dragging it around with you.

2) Bring an additional pair of Shoes and Socks, and change about 1/2 way through. It feels like you have new feet on! Worth the hassle of bringing a back with them.

3) Run contrary to the crowds. Kinda funny to see ALL the people waiting for SSE, when Rio Del Tempo was a walk on.

4) Walk around the lines to "Return with your FP". Most contain ignorant people actually waiting in line for their FP to "come due". This is not the concept of FP nor is required. Walk around and up to the Attendant if he/she is just standing there not looking at FPs, show him your valid FP and walk in.

5) ALWAYS... that is ALWAYS walk to the further FP machine when obtaining one, the farthest away... people love to stand in lines like sheep, and the last one usually has very little or no wait. Provied this myself on 4 occasions in NYE this year.

6) NEVER stand in front of the FP return at an attraction waiting for your FP time to come due. Its rude and ignorant. Stand somewhere else, relax, sit, and wait.

6B) Avoid showing up exactly for your FP time, there will be a TON of people trying to enter, usually to the minute. Since FP's were given out (I think in 5 min intervals), wait 3 minutes, then walk up... you'll be happier, and less stressed, because everyone else had already tried to cram through the entrance at the exact minute their FP was good.

7) CALL NOW for special events if offered, and make a reservation, or find out how early you can...... I'd reckon the Scuba Assist Snorkeling if offered in The Living Seas (or what is is called now?) would be really cool on NYE.

Of course there are just offered as suggestions... these are just a few, but lend themselves to high-traffic days such as NYE.

Had a GREAT TIME. Watched the Fireworks at 7:30 from a prime spot. We decided to watch the official fireworks from out in the parking lot this year. In past years it had taken us up to 3 hours to make it from EPCOT to Pop Century Resort..... (HORRIBLE TRAFFIC PATTERN THAT FORGETS ABOUT POP CENTURY, but thats another thread), so we stayed somewhere else by Downtown Disney, and left early, with a 15 min trip back to our hotel. Don't suggest this for the "Serious" NYE Fan, but we had to get on the road Early on the 1st.

Thanks for Picts Merf!

Thanks for the picture's Merf. Glad we missed those crowds, like going down the week after Thanksgiving, hardly any lines and no waits.

Hey all! We (m&m), the dynamic duo, were there for NYE (and the days preceding and following) as well.

The one thing that I need to mention for those who are totally wigged out about camping there all day:

For one, I think that I would've gone literally insane being in a crowd of that many people all day long - it really drains your energy, patience, and Disney Magic!
Secondly, since the week before Christmas, there have been many people saying "You NEED to get to Epcot before 10 or 11am or you won't get in." That is definitely NOT the case. As with a previous trip, we had lunch at Epcot, walked around FW and WS for a while until we came to grips with the fact that it was just too insanely crowded to do ANYTHING! I have a picture of the 240min wait for Soarin'. C'mon, 240 minutes?! Who is honestly willing to stand for FOUR hours to wait for an attraction when it is that crazy.
Anyway, we went back to the resort to change into our "NYE evening garb." and hopped back to Epcot (via WDW trans.) to arrive at about 5:30. I agree that there were some ridiculous lines at the ticket booths at that time, but we had a shorter wait at the turnstiles than many other days. There were, at most, maybe fifteen people ahead of us when entering.

The moral of the story is that, yes, Epcot was very crowded, but definitely not prohibitive of getting in, even in the evening.
In addition, we jetted out around 11:00 to get back to the resort for the actual countdown to avoid the mad crowds at 12:30 or so and even then, at 11:00p.m., there were LOTS of people still entering.
So, yes, I suppose it is a risk that you may not be able to get in late in the day, but now, as of two trips, I haven't had a problem.

Anyway, great play-by-play merf! (But I can't believe that you camped out for the day! :dazzle: )

The pic of the bridge from France to UK is what World Showcase was like all the way around by the time we went back to Future World. And the lines didn't seem to have died down much when we got back there anyways :)
