The World Fair of 1939 & EPCOT has so many similarities, it zany.

I would ask around for more details. Seems to be a interesting topic here. :lookaroun

*waits for Jackie to get to this thread...:D*

But yeah, very similar. Also notable from 1939 is the ride "Highways and Horizons", which featured a VERY SSE-like city at the end. :D

I wrote a thesis on this a few years back that talks about this...I think I have it in my blog, or a rough draft, at least.

Thats pretty cool I never saw it and I was all over this site reading all the threads, Thats when I had time . I wonder how it would do of they set the whole entire ride up in Epcot or Tomorrowland

Definitely some similarities! I have the brochures for the '39 and '64 versions. They're awesome!!! Shot from '64 is below...

Also, here's a pic from the '39 one vs Horizons:

Ah yes, nothing ever bad can come from letting Man settle and conquer where ever they want too. Just listen to how excited he gets about tearing down the rain forest to build a road!

I love the Futurama building.

I want to see it house a FUTURAMA ride... :lookaroun :D

To anyone who asks why Horizons can't be rebuilt:

There's your answer.

I don't get it - how's that the answer? I don't recall Horizons ever encouraging the removal of rain forests in its version of the future...

Wow seats without guardrails. I bet they have seat belts, but then lawsuits weren't an issue and people respected the rules.

They need a new ride that fits the Horizons / Futurama category, maybe put it where wonders of life was (RIP Wonders of Life).

Well, to be fair, I did crop the Futurama '64-'64 brochure to really highlight the similarities in the ads for each. But yeah, there's no denying that there was at least a hint of inspiration/influence going on there. Here's what the full version looks like (see below) -- it's quite a beauty, eh?

What's funny is that GM went on to sponsor Horizons' next door neighbor and Disney used some scenes inspired by their Ford Magic Skyway pavilion in GM's World of Motion. (And also Universe of Energy.)

Another cool EPCOTish tidbit from the '64 World's Fair is the idea of the traveling theater, ala Universe of Energy. It was first used in the Federal Pavilion. Unfortunately there's like no images on this one except for this one I dug up... So sad that I wouldn't be born for another 14 years and would never get to experience all this cool stuff. I think for us oldschool EPCOT fans it would have been pretty incredible to be there...

I'd be fine with that! You know what's totally crazy? The amount of hard work that went into all of those old world's fairs pavilions -- only to have them torn down and demolished just a year or two after! It's utterly insane to me as someone who grew up with something more permanent like EPCOT.

And as badass as the '64 Futurama building was, the '39 is right up there too -- especially when you consider its from 1939!!! Ha!

EPCOT before it's time. The 21st century began in 1939! :D

Yeah, imagine if EC had been shut down in 1984. Scary.
