EPCOT alternate exits

I was watching a video of Epcot's 2014/15 new years eve IllumiNations, and before the show they announce that alternate park exits will be located "next to the China pavilion, The Mexico pavilion, and the Canada pavilion." Does anyone know what the nature of these exits is, or when they are used? To my knowledge exiting the park at these locations would bring guests through backstage areas and on to Avenue of the Stars.
