EPCOT 9/3 - A tale of inebriants

It was a weekend of firsts for me on my annual Labor Day trip to The Kingdom.

Friday night - First Pineappple Float - yummy:slurp:
Saturday afternoon - First resuce by security because I couldn't find my car - 23 Film, not 32!:hammer:

Saturday night - Witnessed my first drunken display at EPCOT - times two!

I was performing my normal exiting procedure - Headed for England to stock up on Flakes for friends back home when I spotted a man pulling a woman off a bench near Japan. He got her to her feet and began helping/dragging her along. My first thought was they are either drunk, high or want to get on YouTube.

I wasn't too concerned until he decided that the best way to motivate her to move was have her yell "I'm a bad a** m*****-******" at the top of her lungs. Well, staggering is one thing, but that level of profanity at Disney bothered me. However, by the time I spotted a cast memeber they had stopped shouting so I decided to leave well enough alone and proceeded to England.

Flakes purchased, I was nearing Canada when I came across a gaggle of drunken Canadians singing (rather happily) O Canada at the beer kiosk outside the pavilion. I applauded along with the rest of the crowd and kept on moving.

As I was nearing the gift shops at the bridge to Future World, I heard the staggering couple behind me again. They had gone back to their profanity fill mantra. I found a cast member and told him that I thought the lady might need some help. He said "Is she drunk?" I said yes and that they were letting the f word fly rather loudly.

He headed for them and I headed for SSE - beautiful in it's wandlessness.

As I entered the LaL graveyard, they came up behind be again. My personal parinoia kicked in and I was certain that this was all an elaborate plot to rob me (yea, I know I'm a freak:o ). I doubled back behind a headstone and got in behind them. They headed for the tram and I headed on foot to Amaze - walking rapidily and looking over my shoulder.

What a night!

So, tell me, was I wrong to go to a cast member? Where do you draw the line between leaving well enough alone and seeking help?

Still was a great weekend!:sohappy:

When their actions become so that they may negatively affect others. In this case, loudly yelling profanities would meet the criterion. After all, what parents are going to be especially happy if their children hear that language? You did the right thing.

Glad to hear you had a great trip!

As someone who is not opposed to profanity per se, I have to admit I don't wanna hear it at disney. It spoils the magic of the place and just doesn't sound right in that atmosphere. It comes down to being aware of your surroundings. I don't really like the term "inappropriate" but in this case it is just simply inappropriate lol.

That said, just for clarification...

What are flakes?

and

what is the LaL graveyard?

Thanks for tolerating my ignorance!!!

I hope it's okay if I jump in here.
Flake is an English chocolate candy.
LaL is the Leave A Legacy stones at the entrance to Epcot.
Lots of people, myself included, think it looks like a graveyard.:)

You did the right thing in getting a cast member, completely and totally. In fact, you shouldn't have had to if they were yelling that loudly, my guess is that someone else heard them and Disney security should have entered the picture sooner.

I HATE drunks; I am going to do my best to avoid them on my October trip. That's why I ain't gonna go to Universal's Halloween Horror Nights.

Well, that and the fact that I would scream and run like a little girl if anyone came after me in a scary costume.

I think you did the right thing. I think most folks find this kind of language inappropriate anywhere in public.

I personally think each park should have a nicely themed paddy wagon manned by off duty police. Then when something like this happens they simply drive out, put the drunks in it, and quickly remove them to a facility backstage where they can be transported to jail. Just a thought.

I think you did the right thing. The drunks shouting profanity is very different from the drunk Canadians singing O, Canada! They weren't hurting anyone or causing distress (in fact, as you describe it, the people seemed to enjoy them), so you left them alone. I would have enjoyed the Canadians. The profanity people, not so much.

I agree with your post 100%. Being drunk & having a good time :p is one thing, being drunk, obscene, loud, obnoxious, rude...... :lookaroun Well, need I go on? I think not. I like to have a good time as much as anyone else, but not at the expense of ruining everyone else's day.

EDIT: And not with my son in tow either. There is a time & place for that sort of fun.

I always kind of feel bad for loud profanity spewing drunk people...I have no idea why, I just do.

Having said that I do agree that you did the right thing, and look at you, you even stopped yourself the first time because they had (momentarily, as it turned out!) stopped.

Did get an LOL out of your paranoid feeling - I would have felt the same...it is a big park and to repeatedly encounter them!

Its a sad fact that some people just can't hold their ale - its even sadder when they have to share that inability with all around them.

Why do the staff continue to serve them when they're that drunk - UK licensing laws don't allow it

You should be proud of yourself, you prevent a situation from becoming a major problem. We all can think of a million things that could have happened if they were left to their own devices. Anything from a confrontation from an unstable guest with a quick temper to one of them thining it would be "fun" to swim in the lagoon.
I am surprised the castmember or other castmembers didn't get involved long before you had too.
I know that people are on vacation and wanting to have fun, but should remember (or be informed) that alcohol and the sun/heat will intoxicate a person faster.

I was in epcot last week and was amazed at the amount of drinking going on by adults. It seemed like every country in the world showcase had some type of counter to purchase beers and shots. Is it really necessary?I don't get walking around in the middle of the day in a theme park with your kids and a beer bottle or wine glass in your hand.I like to drink,it just doesnt seem appropriate to be doing it this way.just my opinion.
