EPCOT 2020

Here's an overview of my vision for EPCOT could be in the year 2020 with the right planning.

Of course there are two separate areas which EPCOT accommodates and should be looked at as different sections, however I think they can be integrated more closely than they are now.

It is important to enhance the message that EPCOT represents the idea that we're global and we're all in this together.

First, I think the communicore/innoventions concept of it being EPCOT's version of Main Street has never really worked out the way it was expected to, even though I was a big fan of Communicore.

The problem is how people can simply bypass it entirely and never venture inside, unless they're seeking shade/air conditioning.

I would take the entire central plaza between both buildings and enclose it in a clear dome, which would provide coverage when it rains and then I open up the buildings to the exterior a bit, so it basically becomes one large area and more open and inviting to people.

I would change the kiosk in front of the fountain and move a large globe there that glows with neon lights and shows all of the countries where people have visited from that month....kinda similar to the one currently in Spaceship Earth, but better.

It would also highlight all of the countries who participate in the World Showcase, then during the festivals, highlight the countries who have food and drink offerings with interactive displays around the globe so people can view what the foods look like, etc.....more useful than the maps they hand out.

The other Disney parks and resorts can be featured as well, since there's so many around the world now.

Perhaps also highlight the creators of the various exhibits and attractions and what countries they are from.

More info soon on my plan....this is part 1

Part 2 -

Mission:Space - Mission 2. I heard recently that HP isn't sponsoring it anymore? Not sure, but if they're no longer the sponsor...they need Elon Musk and SpaceX to have a presence there, especially as they're discussing an actual Mars mission currently. To have a more realistic version of Mission:Space with the technology being worked on by SpaceX would be an amazing contribution and something that leads to the biggest issue facing EPCOT right now....

....you know it, I know it, they know it. The existing sponsorship model is out the window. They've been lucky with GM and Siemens, but other than that, there's nothing with staying power going on at EPCOT. I really, really wish I knew what those sponsorship contracts consisted of and which party does what.

Yes, I wish Tesla could sponsor Test Track but we know that won't happen for now, so that attraction can stay, maybe with some upgrades and fixes.

One nice option they could offer is to have a 3D printed model of the car you designed.

Part 3 - I can't take credit for this one.

Someone else posted on here, I forgot who  that Journey into Imagination should be a version of Mystic Manor at HKDL which I recommend watching the on-ride footage of, if you haven't seen it already. Doing a version like that but with the return of Dreamfinder and Figment in a trackless ride would be amazing and just what that pavilion needs. Of course the theming can be changed to showcase the imagination that we've come to know and love, and you know what? use more screens to save money, but still make it incredible...and you know what else they could do if they used screens? make the ride unique each time you ride it...or have variations...because our imagination is always changing.

The Land....it's not bad for what it is now, not sure yet what I'd change there. I do wish Soarin' was given its own Aviation themed pavilion as the actual buildings sit between The Land and Imagination, but that's not happening.

The Seas with Nemo and Friends and you almost forget there's an entire aquarium that was the largest in the world when it opened. I suppose we're stuck with the Nemo ride, but they could put more effort into the post-ride exhibits and better signage to show people what's around. They could bring back some of the Seabase Alpha theming IMO which should have never left.

A minor, but I think really cool addition, would be akin to this "Telectroscope" that links London and New York, but instead there could be one for each Disney park around the world:

Basically it's a huge TV and camera setup with a fast internet connection...imagine having this near the center of WDW property in Epcot (That's the place just outside of the west side of Innoventions currently).

We could have one for Anaheim, Paris, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Shanghai around a circle. Any parks that are closed could play feeds from earlier in the day, etc, or show nighttime lights.

Part 4 - So what do we put in the practically empty Innoventions buildings?

Disney should reach out to the small tech companies who are breaking ground in new areas and let them showcase their technology...make it like a more permanent CES. It's not about sponsorship, it's about making EPCOT mean something again to people.

They should also have tech competitions for middle/high schools and colleges who can win a trip to EPCOT. I know things like this exist and they do things "off campus" in the parking lot sometimes but they should be in the park to show things to guests.

Part 5- What to do with the Universe of Energy/Ellen's Energy Adventure?

This is a tough one. A 38 minute attraction that's unchanged for 20 years and the actors definitely look a lot different now. Energy is a controversial topic, possibly now more than ever, and without an energy sponsor, I think it's time for the pavilion to move on to something else.

The only thing that makes sense to me is to bring back Horizons, make it a 2.0 version with a trackless ride system and new vision for the future that we've forgotten. The building for UOE is massive and can hold a lot of ideas...I think actually going through a simulated version of a space colony like we see in Interstellar would be amazing. Yes, it was hinted at in the original Horizons, but they could plus that substantially, especially with all of the new technology. Give it the ability to choose your own ending again, but with a slightly more intense ride system in place.

Disney would do WONDERS to bring the most devoted EPCOT fans in the world back to celebrate the re-launch of the attraction that tied everything together.

Part 6-

The question about Disney characters often comes up these days. Besides Figment, EPCOT didn't have any of the traditional characters when it first opened, but slowly they started coming and we know the rest.

I'm not against having certain characters in the park IF there is also a message and real-world information behind it....Like Baymax from Big Hero 6, like Wall-E, like the characters from Meet the Robinsons, etc.

It is possible to have fictional characters but still present a real-life message. Disney has done that somewhat successfully with their Lion King themed areas in the parks, so why not tech/future themed ones instead of Nemo and Olaf?
