Enter the Grid - Tron Attraction (Open Brainstorming)

So, Tron: Legacy happened. Not sure if I like that it happened (I was horribly disappointed in the film) but it happened just the same. Disney is pushing hard, hoping those Blu Ray sales give them enough to release another one as they really want a franchise.

I think TRON would be well suited for an attraction at a Disney park, and imagineers are currently blue-skying their own, hoping to get the greenlight eventually.

I have an plot. I have a name. I even know what park I'd put it in, and where it would go in said park, but the question is...what kind of a ride would it be?

First things first. The name.

TRON: Enter the Grid

tronteaser.jpg

Located in the currently vacant area between Rock n' Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror, a new mini-section of the park would play host to the attraction, a gift shop and arcade, and a new counter service restaurant.

encomplaza.jpg

the ENCOM store serves as both the ride's gift shop and an actual arcade featuring classic 80's arcade games, including TRON and Space Paranoids

"Silicon Valley Burgers" is a new counter-service dining option that is themed to computers and video games. Tables in the dining area feature top down video games like Pac-Man and Centipede.

"ENCOM Plaza" would also feature nightly entertainment in front of a fountain that uses music and colored lights (think a mini version of the Fountain of Nations, but with electronic music)

Guests enter the attraction through a Hollywood branch of Flynn's Arcade. The queue is features interactive "arcade games" to keep guests entertained while waiting. At the back of the queue is a lone TRON arcade game unit. Guests are ushered past it into a pre-show room. Inside they are informed they have been chosen to be beta-test the newest ENCOM virtual experience, digitization onto the Grid.

After a fiber-optics show to represent being digitized, guests are then brought to their ride vehicles.

The plot of the ride is this. Guests are digitized and placed on the grid, as per the pre-show's set up. Things, as usual in a theme park, go wrong when Ed Dillinger Jr. uploads his fathers old Master Control Program onto the server, as well as a new version of the Sark program. Together they attempt to derez the guests, who now have to escape the grid alive. It's not just a game anymore.

This is where I get stuck. What kind of a ride should this be. I have so many ideas it boggles my mind.

a few ideas I had were

a) a trackless ride system like TDL's Hunny Hunt, to give the illusion of free movement on the Gird.
b) a EMV ride through the grid, facing off against MCP and Sark using Buzz Lightyear style lazer tag guns.
c) A combo of the two above ideas.

So, what say you? What kind of TRON ride would you like to see. I have one proviso. It cannot be a roller-coaster or drop style ride as those are already covered in this corner of Hollywood Studio. Otherwise, let your imaginations run wild. :)

edit: why can't you post embeded pictures in this area? other areas let me but not here. Weird.

These are great ideas! As for the ride system, go with the trackless technology with your EMV idea's laser guns. I wouldn't use the EMV because they best simulate rugged terrain as seen in Indy and CTX (Dinosaur!).

A free motion EMV is a cool combination in theory, but I have a feeling it would be too problematic with the forces at work

i would actually rather see this in Magic Kingdom if they found a way to get a path between space mountain and the indy cars to get to the extra space available in tomorrow land it would be the perfect addition. As for the ride itself, I could totally see this as a kind of half futuristic dark ride ride half high speed thriller. It would really add some kick to the MK.

I would like to see Flynn's Arcade as an interactive queue for a tron lightcycle ride, with the basement office being the intro room that leads to the coaster trains similar to to ToT and HM.

I liked the idea of a trackless ride system like pooh's hunny ride but a compact flying coaster would be more fun. I would also like to see the End of Line Bar built as a lounge/bar.

The ideas you threw out would be very amazing if formed into a real ride, I do enjoy the Buzz Lightyear laser tag gun idea...

Also, I think it would be interesting if you were to use the Star Tours ride system, to get that thrill of movement, the Mission: Space ride system, to make it feel as if you were racing on light cycles, perhaps, at incredible speeds, OR both of them combined, which would be awesome!

EMV or trackless sounds amazing (it would probably end up being EMV, not sure how trackless would translate to larger scale vehicles in a smaller more confined space). Some sort of light runner vehicle. I don't think the motorcycles would be so great as a ride vehicle, so i'd take the Tron Legacy car vehicles instead personally-

Months later, I finally look back at this thread. That picture is actually exactly what I had in mind for the ride vehicles. Something that looks like Tron, but is more practical that a light cycle.

Tron Attraction

Came up with this idea just a little while back:

DisneyQuest has not recived to much love in recent memory and I think with Tron being a "video game" movie and DisneyQuest has the perfect setting for a Tron attraction. The ride is similar to the Aladdin ride in DQ (DisneyQuest) You sit on a motorcycle like seat in this case a lightcycle. The lightcycle his lined up next to 8-10 other cycles. They all light up and look exactly like the ones in the movie. (I did some concept art and I think you can get what I mean) all the cycles are mounted on a turntable to give the effect of moving. Other effects can be used like light and wind to make it more realistic.

How it all works...

You approch the entrance of Tron: Lightcycle Battle (Still working on a name, maybe I can get some help) The entrance is a large, tall black wall that has the neon blue patterns throughout the wall. There you enter the waiting line. It is a tunnel that has the neon blue illuminating the hallways. Daft Punks amazing soundtrack is playing through the background. You enter the Preshow room. The room in which the pre show is in has a glass floor with neon tubes that look like the grid in the lightcycle arena. Here you find out that you are a User (I think that is what same was called ) and that you will be competing in the lightcycle games. Here you learn how to control your vehical and other things about the game. After the video you are led to you lightcycles. Similar to the Aladdin virtual reality ride you are given a head piece which connects to your "helmet" which is above each of the cycles. When boarding grab the helmet and connect it to your headpiece. Once all 8-10 cycles are loaded a cast member activates the saftey harness. This harness presses down on your back and keeps you from falling off the ride allthough the ride only moves side to side and in a circle not foward or backwards. (See Pony Express @ Knotts Berry Farm for more Info on saftey restraints. The ride begins and you have to "derezz" the other people playing just like it was done in the movie. Cause them to crash into the lightwall thing or hit them with your identiy disc. Remember this is all Virtual Reality... Its kind of hard to explain but Hopefully you guys get the idea. I really am proud of this idea and would LOVE TO HEAR FEEDBACK!!!!

I had a similar idea, but it was for Epcot. A ENCOM themed pavilion (actually sponsored by a video game company like Sony or Microsoft or something)

The ride would be similar to your idea, but the 8-10 vehicles would take part in the same ride, racing against each other, and instead of helmets, a box would lower (or rise) around the vehicle, giving the rider a 360 experience without the cumbersome helmet. (possibly 3D if the goggles are similar to Star Tours new ones)

Have you seen the commercials for lexus that shows their new simulators? They place their test drivers in a car that is placed on a turntable, the simulator can move around a small area to simulate the feeling of movement.

link

I think that disney could use a similar system to better simulate the feeling of movement to guests. The simulator can be smaller and have guests strapped down to a lightcycle. The grid can also be smaller with maybe two lightcycles in the simulator dome.

For a Disneyland attraction for Tron I see them enclosing the Peoplemover track, putting a new motorbike ride system in and replacing the Carousel theater with load/some show space.

Id like to see the tron ride in Magic Kingdom.
IMO, The lands that need a brand new E-Ticket ride are Adventureland and Tomorrowland. Not counting minor attractions that they could use....
