Encoding using Virtual Dub and xVID

I know pretty much zip about video encoding...

In the past, I've used built in codecs provided by my digital editing programs (like Adobe Premiere's built-in stuff).

However, I would like to be able to encode in an AVI format. This way anybody can view the video (and it's not in a designated format that requires a certain player like the .wmv or .mov formats do).

So, I was talking to a friend who suggested a program called virtual dub and a codec called xVid. Well, like I said, I'm a complete beginner. So, would any experts out there be able to point me to a tutorial that explains to me how to encode easily using these tools. I would like to get a 2.4 gig video down to around 20 mB.

Thanks for any help!

better idea is to get the divx 6 create bundle..and then get a copy of dr.divx (thats free i believe).

One you rip your virtualdub files..you can compress them using dr.divx to the size you want :)

oh..and getting a 2.4 gig file to 20 megs is REALLY going to have some serious quality loss :)

Your knowledge is so incredibly beyond mine, I couldn't decypher what you're asking. :veryconfu

Sorry, but since you bumped, I figured I'd at least acknowledge that you posted.

thanks, I'm going to try to follow one of the tuturiols on doom9.org

I have no doubt that quality is going to suffer as a result (it's guaranteed to). But, in the wmv format, I got it down to around 25 mB and the quality was still watchable....hopefully, xVID can work some magic.

Thanks all
