Earthquake felt in Disneyland

I know this is a Walt Disney World fan site, but our freinds in Disneyland just felt an earthquake in Cali. It looks like the parks will close for the rest of the day to check the rides. Hope all is well with our freinds on the other side of the states!

I felt it at while browsing at a local wine shop; it was very mild, but lasted quite a long time and just gently rolled along making things sway and swing. No damage in OC, nor down in San Diego County, but you could tell that it was a large earthquake that was a long distance away. It was a 6.9, 100 miles south of the border in Baja California.

I just talked to friends at Disneyland and many attractions have shut down, but some have already reopened, and others are in the process of starting back up. Cast Members standing in front of the Matterhorn Bobsleds for instance are telling guests that building engineers are checking the structures and they should reopen later tonight. Disneyland is open until Midnight tonight, and DCA is open until 10:00PM, so I'm sure that almost everything will reopen by the late evening.

In short, no biggie. But it was an interesting one to gently ride through, as those things go.

Glad your OK the news stations make everything sound so much scarier than it really is. They must of been wrong about the parks closing early. Thanks for the info stay safe.

More info on the quake as well as a bit on DLR-
http://sciencedude.freedomblogging.com/2010/04/04/6-9-earthquake-near-san-diego-shakes-o-c/95905/
And no injuries and no damage was reported at the Disneyland Resort says Suzi Brown, director of media relations at the Disneyland Resort. Protocol dictates that all attractions are shut off as soon as an earthquake is detected. All attractions are checked for safety and are brought back online once deemed safe.
Someone was stuck in an elevator at Star Tours in Disneyland. Brown says that was quickly resolved.

Mousewait has reports of attractions that have been reopened, following the earlier closure.

Theres a thread in the DL section-:)

It was a very unique earthquake. Totally silent, lasted about 20 seconds, very smooth rolling motion, none of the usual clatter and vibrations and noise.

Everyone I've spoken to felt the exact same way during it; as if something was wrong with themselves, and they pretended as though nothing was wrong. I thought perhaps I was not feeling well and needed to eat something, so I steadied myself against a wall in the shop because I thought I was going to pass out. Only after about 10 seconds of trying to play it cool in this public place did I realize it was the entire building rolling around and not just me having some sort of a weird fainting spell.

After it was over I decided it was not a local earthquake, but the residual effects of a very strong quake someplace far away. I got in the car and the radio already was announcing it was a 6.9 down in Baja.

I have been at Disneyland during earthquakes that were more local, and the CM's do an amazing job at shutting everything down and then reopening them in a predetermined pattern. If a Florida-style lightning and torential rain storm ever hit Anaheim (bizarrely rare in SoCal), the Disneyland CM's would probably all freak out. But in earthquakes, they all know their role and know exactly what to do and what to say to park guests. It's actually very impressive. :sohappy:

That is so funny TP2000:lol: Glad we don't have earthquake's in Florida. They sound kind of freaky to me. You just can't prepare for them like we do in hurricanes and thunderstorms. Again happy your OK.

Thanks! Yes, an earthquake is nothing you can prepare for aside from setting aside some bottled water and flashlights out in the garage. I just got back from dinner with friends, and they all agreed that this one was one of the oddest ones anyone has ever experienced. Just so quiet and gently rolling and surreal.

The earthquake happened around 3:45 PM, and by 5:00 PM most Disneyland attractions had reopened. Now around 9:00 PM Disneyland is back up and running at full steam, I can see all the attractions in Paradise Pier lit up and working from my deck, and Disneyland will remain open until the usual Midnight closing time tonight. No big deal really.

Disneyland feels 7.2 earthquake today
By Leah Zanolla
Apr 4, 2010

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Baja California, Mexico just south of the U.S. border this afternoon at 3:40 pm. It was felt across three states, including Anaheim and the Disneyland area.

According to Suzi Brown, director of media relations for Disneyland, no injuries and no damage was reported at the Disneyland Resort. Per protocol, all attractions are shut down when an earthquake is detected. After being checked for safety, they are brought back online. One guest was stuck in an elevator at Star Tours, but has since gotten out.

At this time, Disney's California Adventure is back up and running. Disneyland Park is about 50% back up and will be completely open in a few hours.

This was my first earthquake, and it took me a while to figure out what on earth was going on. We were really moving down here in San Diego County, but it wasn't at all like I expected an earthquake to feel like. It was like you said...a smooth rolling. There was no shaking or rattling, just swaying. I thought it was fun!
