If a park has early entry for resort guests at 8:00 a.m. with regular park opening set for 9:00 a.m. can a resort guest arrive around 8:45 a.m. and easily get in ahead of off-site guests who are waiting to get in?

They usually have dedicated lines for resort guests on early entry days so that you don't have to push your way around non-resort guests.

Yup, that's how it works.
Do they keep certain lines open for resort guests or do off-site guests have to stay behind a certain point or off to one side? I'm actually trying to help another family know what to do if they are not able to get there on time to enter when the park opens for EE. Since we are always there right when the park opens for EE, I wasn't really sure how it works if you were trying to get in say 15 minutes before the regular park opening time.
