EA and Disney team up for Star Wars games

Gamespot said:
Electronic Arts and The Walt Disney company today announced a new multi-year exclusive agreement to develop and publish new games based on Star Wars characters and stories.

As part of the agreement, EA will create new Star Wars titles for a "core gaming audience." These games will span "all interactive platforms" and "the most popular game genres." Disney, meanwhile, will retain rights to create new Star Wars games for mobile, social, tablet, and online markets.
"Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe," EA Labels president Frank Gibeau said in a statement. "Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans."
Battlefield studio DICE and Dead Space outfit Visceral Games are currently making new Star Wars games, joining BioWare, which will continue to support Star Wars: The Old Republic. The new games from DICE and Visceral will run on the Frostbite 3 engine.
"The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay," Gibeau said.
Financial terms of the EA-Disney deal were not disclosed. EA will report earnings tomorrow after market close, where more information about the deal is expected to be divulged.
The fate of Star Wars: 1313 and Star Wars: First Assault remains unclear.

I am not too sure what to think of this as EA as a developer is not one that I respect all that much. I guess as a plus maybe we see bioware do a proper knights of the old republic 3. EA has a real bad record of throwing sub par products out based on name sake alone because they know it will sell. I had really hoped that we may get to see some of the top developers out there get a crack at Star Wars, but oh well. Lets hope EA has turned over a new leaf.

I am not to thrilled about the a company that holds the title "Worst Company in America" 2 years running either. I would have much rather seen Valve, Irrational, 343 or Bungie get a shot. I am somewhat pleased the Bioware is still involved, but I have a feeling that they will be cut as soon as the MMORPG has run its course.

Well, Star Wars is now in the hands of the gaming company known for sucking the life out of just about everything it touches. Hopefully, EA will hand off the license to developers who want to do more than cash in on the name. There have been some great Star Wars games in the past, lets hope for the best.

Jimmy Thick- Just got Empire at War off Steam for 6 bucks, game ROCKS!!!

I agree, so many talented developers that Disney could have partnered with. EA and Disney interactive share a lot of the same philosophies, so maybe thats why Disney went with them. As for Bioware, I hope they do separate from EA like Bungie did with Microsoft. That way they can go back to making great games without EA being involved to muck things up. **cough**masseffect3multiplayer**cough**

EA does some decent games, but more importantly they have a LOT of developers -- at this point in time, it isn't about creating great games for you, its about Disney needing to pump up their Electronic Gaming division, which is bleeding money left and right. The hope being that a new Star Wars video game/s, ANY new video games, will help pump up their income in that division, and the sooner the better as far as Disney Inc is concerned.

Well I hope EA invests in this game like they do with madden and NCAA football. Some of their other games are weak.
I hope they don't give star wars the Madden treatment. What EA has done to Madden, is turn it into a yearly rehash with new rosters, very few improvements and minimal changes. This is my biggest fear for the Star Wars franchise in EAs hands.

Here is the problem, EA is not very respected by the gaming community at the moment. If the games are mediocre, lets get this out now, fill it with micro transaction... you will see poor results. There is an element of boycotting going on among gamers. Games like crysis 3 and dead space 3 (2 big EA releases) did not meet EAs expectations. Why? Both games got decent reviews and had a strong fan base. I believe the reason they didn't do better, is a lot of fans won't pay full price for EA games because of the way the company does things. I have bought 2 games by them in the last 3 1/2yrs, mass effect 2 & 3. Unless the game is exceptional, EA will not get my money, even if it is Star Wars.
