DVRs?

My family currently rents a DVR from Verizon. However, we believe that in the long-run, we may save money by purchasing a DVR. My father has asked me to do some research on good DVRs. So I turn to all of you lovely people. Are there any DVRs that you recommend? We are looking for one that supports Verizon FIOS, will not cost an additional subscription fee, can record shows in HD, and isn't horribly expensive (<300 ideally). It would also be nice if it were expandable so we could record shows in one room and watch in another. Any insights or experience you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Magnavox HDD &DVD recorder in two rooms. I accidently found out about these machines. They basically do what a DVR does, but there's no cost once you buy them. It has a huge hard drive. You can record to it, and then if it's something you want to keep, you download onto a DVD. I believe the last one I bought was around 249.00. The first one was only 199.00. I got them from Amazon.

Can you change settings remotely from a purchased DVR? Xfinity has an app that I can use to change my DVR settings, delete stuff, record stuff on the fly, etc.

Good question. I will add that to my list of questions to ask them when I call after I narrow down a few options for a DVR. You can from the DVRs you rent from them, but I'm not sure about a DVR you purchase yourself.
