Have any of you rented points from a DVC member?
Is it cheap to do this?
Also, how can I go about doing this if I decide to?

Thanks!

I'm a DVC memeber so I've never rented points but I can tell you most charge between $8-$10 per point and depending upon what size room and what dates you need them for you could easily spend $3000 (for a week) on points alone. Like when we stay @ SSR in a two bedroom it's 316 points for our yearly July trip.

There are a bunch of sites that do point rentals, jsut do a google search.
Make sure you get the reservations made in your name and of course don't send any money until you can confirm the resivations have been made.

We did it once, but it was back in 2005. I believe we used this site http://www.wdwinfo.com/disney-vacation-club/faq.shtml on this page click Rent/Trade Points to see what ppl are offering.

When you find someone with the right amount or points at the right price :D then you deal with them through the forum and if you 2 decide make a deal then other info is exchanged more securely. This site has a section for FAQ that may cover a lot for you.

Back in 2005, we got a studio at OKW for a little less than we could have stayed at a moderate (maybe 150-200 less for the whole week). Hey, that was 4 years ago...i don't remember exactly :p

It really depend on the seller, you could get someone who needs to get rid of some points fast (because they're gonna expire) and get a really great deal but if you are planning ahead with specific dates in mind you may only get a moderate sized savings. Also, the bigger you go...the more you pay, 1 and 2 bedrooms can really be nice but they're gonna cost ya. But I have heard (unconfirmed) that overall it will at the very least be slightly cheaper than getting one of these type rooms direct from Disney.

You probably knew this but just in case, DVC owners can book their home resort up to 11 month in advance but they can book at any DVC resort up to 7 months in advance...so depending on when you are going that may give you more options of whom you can rent from.

Good luck wherever you stay!

Most DVC owners that rent points set the price to cover the yearly membership fees.

Disney watches to make sure nobody is renting points as a profit making venture - going into the business of renting points.

One thing to remember when renting points, is that until the time you check in, the people at DVC will ONLY deal with the owner of the points - not you.

You cannot call up an check on your reservation, you cannot call and try to change dates, you cannot do anything. They will not talk to you unless you are an owner.

That means you have to have some way to communicate changes to the owner you are renting from. It can make booking tricky unless you can be on a conference call, IM, or some such other communications method with them while they are booking your reservation.

I've rented points twice before and doing so for a third time for our trip in two weeks.

Just like normal bookings, you get a cheaper point rate Monday-Thursday and during value season, etc...

We've always booked a 1Br suite at the boardwalk and love it. This upcoming trip, I paid $9.50/point believe. The room itself was about $850 for a 4 nights. Not bad for 1 Bedroom suite with a full kitchen, living room, balconies, washer/dryer and a nice whirlpool tub bathroom. Points on average go for about $10/point but can be as low as $7 from renters needing to ditch points asap, or as high $13.

Keep in mind this cost doesn't include park tickets either. So depending on when you travel, the resort, and trip length renting points can be quite the bargain for the kind of room you get.

Points vary by room type, resort, day of the week and season. You can calculate points here:

http://www.wdwinfo.com/resort/dvcpoint.cfm

There's a forum at that site for point rentals as well. I've rented my points from members there all 3 times.

There's one kinda "catch" though. As mentioned, the typical booking window for DVC members is like 7-11 months out, so you need to really plan your vacation way ahead of time in order to secure a room for the dates you want. You can wait to see if you get lucky with cheap points, but there's a likely chance you won't find a room at the resort you want or find a resort with the type of room you want. For example, I tried to rent points for a studio for my mother-in-law during our Sept trip in August, not a single studio room was available anywhere.

We rented points in 2008 and stayed at BCV :king:
It was a beautiful resort & I would consider doing it again

My DH wasn't comfortable at first but after we did some homework & crossed the t's and dotted our i's .... everything went smoothly at check in.

If it's not too personal and won't lead to big "love DVC vs. hate DVC debate", may I ask why you've chosen to spend $3000 each year on a room instead of becoming members?

I am a DVC member, but I can hazard some guesses.

at $100 a point to buy in, they are going to need a $30,000 contract to buy in. Just on the price alone it would take 10 years to break even. Factor in the time cost of money, and its more. Maybe they don't plan on taking such a large vacation to WDW in 10 years.

$30,000 is a chunk of change to have laying around. $3,000 is not so much. A lot of people are leery of finanacing or maybe do not have the credit to finanace.

Maybe they are in their mid 60's and dont expect to survive to the end of the contract.

jMicro59 said he is a DVC member, unless you're just asking that generally?

As for a $3000/room, that depends on when you're going and where your going.

I'm headed to the Boardwalk Villas next week for a Sun-Thur trip in a 1BR suite, only cost me $850 for DVC rental points. Sun-Thurs are the lowest point days, as well as being Value season (Ends the day we check out).

Why haven't I simply become a member? Cause to me, it's cheaper to rent. Bit of hassle to secure a reservation at times, but worth it.
