In WDW, how long have some of the "classic" rides been there w/o major updates or rehabs? Space Mountain for example.
After riding it recently, it wouldn't seem that it has been updated in 15 to 20 years. (Although, I seem to remember it has been recently) The queue line is okay, but with today's technology seems bland. The ride is mainly a rollercoaster w/ little effects, but even the first incline, the manequins in the "control tower" look very old & outdated.. surely that could be refitted with new costumes or turned into AAs of some sort. The sound effects in the "take off" don't sound of good quality.
Although I like SM, it feels outdated & the exit emphasizes that. The "look into the future" could be very neat & interesting, but it just has a feeling of "Welcome to 1980, we don't care to make this modern" when it wouldn't really take alot of effort. :hammer:
Certain rides like Haunted Mansion seem older, but somehow it still "fits" with that ride. The "vintage" feel doesn't bother me. The same kind of goes with PotC.. but the character audio, gun effects, etc could use some tune-up.
I definately don't think in order for the park to stay "new & fresh" do they need to change the rides every 5 years, but even rides that have been around for 10 to 20 years.. a change in scenes, or even an upgrade with technology makes it seem different. I like revisiting alot of my favorite rides, but sometimes the lack of surprise & noticing that after several years w/o visiting, not alot has changed, is kind of disappointing.
TGMR is an excellent ride. The first time I rode it I loved it. Even now I still think it's neat, but after 16 years, I think everyone in the world has had a fair chance to ride it, & that it would be an appropriate time to change it up a bit.
The same goes for "Star Tours," luckilly something is finally being done. I still love the atmosphere of the ride, but the actual "thrill" or "excitment" of the ride itself is lacking. Simulators aren't amazing anymore, as they were in 1992 when I first rode it. It's not the lack of "more" rides that disappoints me, but the very slow progression of changing/updating the older ones.
Anyone have comments on this topic? I know it's been covered in different ways in the past. What are the longest running rides at WDW.. any that haven't had any major shut downs for rehab?
