Dumb question about the Yeti

I was just wondering, why is it that the Yeti is brown, but it seems like all of the merchandise, shows the Yeti as all white?

It's a cost cutting measure for Disney.

The can sell the exact same plush yeti on both coast for both Everest and the Matterhorn and save money on design.

Also, I bet that if it were brown it would look too much like a bear.

I always thought it had something to do with "snow". You know, makes it look like it was high up the mountain where the snow is.

Totally makes sense! Thanks!

I never really saw Matterhorn merchandise at Disney...and Harold doesn't have a fro like our yeti...I just thought it was to match the assumption that the "abominable snowman" is white. Maybe he's just brown in the dim cave lighting, but would be white in the snow...you know, like polar bears. Polar bears don't have white fur, they have clear fur. It looks white in the winter, due to the snow, but in the summer, they get algae in their fur that turns it green. They also look more gray or brown on dreary days, and I'm sure would appear brown if you saw one in a cave.

When I was part of the opening team for the Cargo Bay we got to talk with the lady who designed all of the merchandise for the store. And because the project was so secretive they would not allow her to see but a couple concept sketches for the attraction. So alot of what she designed was kind of "in the blind" that is probably my guess as to what happened with the yeti. We all know how secretive WDI has been about the yeti the person who was in charge of designing the merchandise probably had no idea what the yeti looked like or anything.

Winter Yeti/Summer Yeti

The best explanation I can provide is that the Yeti, like most animals that live in cold, snowy areas, has thick white fur in winter and molts in summer to a darker, brownish fur. Thus the creature blends in with the snows of winter and the darker hues of summer. Natural camouflage.

The shop just carries a winter Yeti [maybe when they captured it it was in winter], while the ride's Yeti has adapted to the warmer climbs of central Florida.
