Driving to WDW looking for hotel suggestion along the way

We'll be driving the 95 south corridor in early July with about a 15-16 hours drive. Since we have a 3 year old, we would like to break it up into 2 days drive (each way).

So, we're looking for suggestions on a good place to stop for the night that is fairly inexpensive but not a dive. (Got to save those $'s for Disney!). Probably somewhere around the North Carolina / South Carolina border.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Country Inn & Suites in Santee, South Carolina is a very nice hotel. It may be a little bit farther south then you're looking for, but it is a great hotel. Very clean, great staff. We have seen other people who have returned to stay there again.

On the return trip, I recommend the Wingate Inn & Suites in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Finding a good place to stay in Virginia is hard. This hotel is on the exit after the downtown Fredericksburg exit. It is a business hotel, so the clientele is a little different. Again, very clean, great staff.

Of course, I live in New York, so the coming home trip requires a stay in Virginia. That may not be so for you.

if you are willing to be flexible, and are traveling teh week after the july 4th week, then pick up one of thoes free travel guides at the rest stops and fast food restaunts along 95. You will find the best rates around in thoes books, because they are ment to fill empty rooms. However, you run the risk of having to drive to several hotels if they do not have any rooms avalbale for that price, and you usually cannot make reseverations for the room. If it is going to be july 4th week, do not do it. Make reservations cuz the hotel rooms WILL BE FULL

The books work based on the hotels anticipated empty rooms. For example if they antisipate twenty empty rooms, they will take twenty cupons at thatt dirt cheep rate, and they are not obligated to give you that price if they think they can fill rooms at regular prices. Thoes rates are the cheepest you can get.

Whenever I travel, I do it on slow periods and I do not make plans. I do it so I can use the book, but then again, my wife and I are very flexable people.

Thanks for you comments. We're probably leaving Maryland July 2. We want to be at our family's near Tampa by July 4.

Do not do my suggestion. You will be sleeping in your car if you do. Make reservations now.

Now that we have moved to Las Vegas driving to Florida is an insane idea, but when we lived in Pittsburgh, we would always stop in Brunswick, GA. It gets you past Savannah and you are very close to the Florida border.

I have driven from Pittsburgh to Florida myself at least 15 times and with my family more than I could ever count and we stayed here almost every time. There are at least a dozen acceptable motels in this area so finding a room (even for Fourth of July weekend) shouldn't be difficult.
