I've been tracking down a number of "lost" Disney television specials for the last few years; it's become increasingly difficult as people are throwing out their old VHS tapes.
I recently found the one that started this bizarre quest 3 years ago, "Down and Out with Donald Duck" which was shown a few times between 1987 and 1989. Although it didn't have to much original animation it was still funny (and a little sad, too). My mother actually found a copy when she was sorting out her old home movies; I've been converting all the old VHS tapes to DVD for her and she sent over the tape containing 8 or 9 Donald cartoons and "Down and Out with Donald Duck" recorded off of the air in the 80s. I quickly put it on DVD and added it to my collection.
I'd even contacted the Disney TV office is hopes that there might be a chance of official releases of things like Mickey's 60 Birthday special to DVD and no one there even seemed to know what I was talking about. I realize that a lot of these shows are 20 years old now, but I think that people might still be interested.
Anyone else out there remember these old specials? Why do you think Disney never put some of the old specials on DVD?
"Down and Out with Donald Duck" had always been my favorite as a girl. Donald freaks out, tries to kill Mickey, loses Daisy, leaves the Disney Studios and the whole thing is like a big 60 Minutes parody (complete with Donald Duck pocket watch). I can see why they stopped showing it ...

In the words of the Narrator:
"It was obvious that Donald was a stranded duck. This is not a pretty story, but one that must be told. Humiliated and alone, Donald crept into obscurity. It was apparent that friends of a feather had left the duck sinking in a quack-mire. Will he pull out?
Hey, this is a Disney special; of course he will!"
