What's up with the dolphin on top of the swan and dolphin? Is there any explanation as to why it looks nothing like a dolphin? That's always bothered me.

You and me both! It should be called "The Fish". I'm told that it's an Asian representation of a dolphin, but I'm not quite sure I buy that.... :)

Mahi-Mahi

Hi, all -

The Dolphins atop the hotel of same name are representations of Dolphin fish, which is commonly served as Mahi-Mahi. The Dolphins such as "Flipper" and those cavorting at Sea World are, of course, mammals.

The problem is we are used to Salty Waters dolphins. The ones you see at Sea World. But, there are also other type of dolphins which are not necesarily those ones we are familiarized with. For example the Amazonian dolphin which swims in rivers and not sea. However, yes, they could have used the well-known one for the statue.

I like cm1988's explanation, but it doesn't look like Mahi-Mahi either, Mahi mahi have a very pronounced FLAT head, these don't..And the statues look like they have feathers...It's just artistic. Who really cares?

I've been told the stautes are based on "mythologized" mahi, a.k.a. fictional fish.

Anyone remember seeing them constructed? There was a "statuary lot" near where the Tower Of Terror now looms. Wood forms were built first, then covered with fibreglass, then painted, then hoisted by helicopter onto the buildings.

The first statue constructed was the swans. The bottom half of them looked like boats... I thought at the time they might be building a water ride over there.

Over the next year or so, the swans, dolphins, seashell fountains and even some smaller pieces were constructed there.

After opening, during the first holiday season, gigantic red bows adorned the necks of the swans. Haven't seen those since.

Woo....cm1988....I guess we all know why they call dolphin fish Mahi-Mahi.....It sounds much better to order a mahi mahi fish san rather than asking the waiter for "Flipper on a Bun"....
