Does anyone else think these discount offers are getting to be a bit much?

I just feel that Disney needs to look at how they're doing things. I like discounts just as much as the other person does, but come on! I guess I'm looking for an end to this, and some serious thought to "true pricing" rather than such outrageous regularly priced rooms and restaurants.:( Perhaps I'm "preaching to the choir" here, so to speak. I wasn't sure if there was another discussion going on about this ( there may be). Please forgive me .:( What are your thoughts?

Well...it is the old adage "whatever the market will bear". If they can sell X amount of rooms without discounts to those uninformed folks who don't do research at (for argument sake) $100/night and then once they realize that they will not fill the remaining 300 rooms of a 1500 room resort they offer the room at $70/night then they have done very well and I would doubt that a huge portion of the guests (the uninformed) rebook with the discount and even of they try to there is a limited number of discounted rooms anyway. Like it or not it seems like shrewd accounting to me and if I was a shareholder I would be all for it. New model year cars cost more than leftovers at the end of the year too so other industries employ the "strike while the iron is hot" tactics as well.

It's marketing. People don't like to pay full price for a vacation, but they'd love a discount on their rooms! Whether it's the same price or not, psychologically people will tend to think if it's on sale, it's cheaper. It's the same reason you see things priced at $4.99 rather than $5.00. It's weird, but it brings in more people.

I thought It was strange this year when we went for New Years week we payed right at 200.00 per night for Pop Century.... Then immediately the 30% off on rooms came out. Its almost like they raised the prices just to put them on sale on non primetime weeks. Its almost the same philosophy the Big Department stores use on clothing... and we all fall for it.... we love to get a 100.00 dress for 30.00 bucks..... 70% off. Truth is it probably should have been 30.00 in the first place.... BUT we feel like we got a bargain and feel great..... :)

I was at Shopko a couple weeks ago and saw a sofa was priced at $700-800, and the sale said it was $200. Only very gullible people will believe it was actually once sold for $700. And it was just a plain, cheap couch. Nothing special whatsoever! :p

No, it sounds more like people are complaining that prices are over-inflated to make "discounts" seem like a great deal.

Prices are inflated, but like others have said, people are willing to pay it. It makes no sense for Disney as a private company to stop raising their prices if people are willing to pay for it. It's just smart business. Eventually they will price many people out of a vacation and that's when we'll see prices drop. I will only stay at value resorts and during Florida Resident room offers. If they stop those or they continue to go up I'll be staying off site. I remember when value was $55 a night for Florida Resident. Now during the week it's about $80 and there are no discounts for weekends.

A lot of industries have moved in this direction - setting regular prices very high to get extra revenue from people who are able and willing to pay it, but doing a lot of targeted discounting so they don't lose everyone else's business. Airlines have been setting ticket prices this way for a long time. Private universities have been doing it - tuition, fees etc. have been going up way faster than inflation but their need-based financial aid has gone up too. It's charging what the market will bear - but going further and trying to charge the highest price each customer will bear.

This is it in a nut shell. Put an item on a shelf for $5 and it will sit there. Increase the price to $10 and have a buy one get one free sale and they will fly off the shelves. Stupid, but nearly all of us fall for it.

I'm with ya! They REALLY need to reexamine exactly what they are selling- I know it's "Disney" but the rooms, even for Disney, are NOT worth nearly what they cost! I do think there needs to be "offers" to attract newbies, but if they laid off the high prices across the board that might do it as well. People like to "think" they're getting something for nothing (ie "free" dining")- and I'm sure that will continue. I think there should be more rewards for those of us that continue to return year after year- seems like we're the only ones that DON'T get discounts!
