Ever since the release of "Tarzan," Disney traditional animated pictures have exhibited a disturbing (IMO) trend. All these films have eliminated original music sung by the characters. This bothers me greatly. I believe that music in Disney pictures is very important. After all, this music inspires broadway shows, background music in the parks, attractions, and are just plain fun to listen to and sing.

I have been told several times that Disney eliminated orginal music sung by the characters because it was very unpopular. How can this be true? Disney songs are an institution in this world. Plus, I could simply not imagine movies like Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid with out the musical numbers. If they stop producing songs, then what are they going to provide as background music to the shows and parks?

Please provide your thoughts on this topic. Do you like original music in your Disney movies? Or would you rather watch really long cartoons (i.e. Treasure Planet, Lilo and Stitch, etc.)

P.S. I don't count background music that has been redone (i.e. the Elvis songs in Lilo and Stitch) or soundtrack music (i.e Phil Collins Songs) to be true Disney Music.

The Musical is the ESSENTIAL. Ever since Mulan, Disney hasn't gotten the guts to put song in a film sung by the characters. Sure, here and there you get Trashing the Camp and Koda singing 20 seconds of "On My Way."

However, the tradition of CATCHY tunes is what the moviegoers can keep with them. This is one important aspect that we've lost that I think has personally made Disney Feature Animation go WAY downhill since Mulan.

Sure, Collins is great and all. But, for goodness sakes. At least experiment and learn from "Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast," "Lion King," and nearly every other Disney classic from the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and 70s.

It will be sad to hear the same songs over and over again in the theme parks: Under the Sea, Be Our Guest, Heigh Ho.

Where are the NEW ones??

I've asked this question to myself...

and i am really not that bothered. not saying that the music in Disney movies are dumb and pointless, some songs always move me, id like if the new movies did at least have just one song sung by a main character then at least to create the catchy song from that movie :), but not like a musical all the way through, i liked the tarzan music, even though the characters never sung you still find yourself singing along, lol.

and of course the finding nemo music, Thomas Newman, what can i say, he's a genius :)

It seems like everyone at school thinks Disney's songs are dumb, but I don't understand that. I think that they really do like them at heart, but just don't want to admit it. I've seen other bad non-disney cartoons and their songs totally suck! They're either boring, or annoying. Disney's songs are the best, and I think that they should bring back singing chracters.

I grew up on Disney animated films, and as a child, all I listened to were the soundtracks to those movies. I knew the words to every song from every Disney movie by heart...and I still do to this day. To me, an animated movie without catchy songs is just not up to the Disney par. Some of the most memorable moments from Disney's past involved songs...what would Snow White have been without her beautiful voice? Would "The Three Little Pigs" really have been so popular without the catchy song that accompanied it?

Disney animated movies and music, to me, are entertwined. I'm 21 years old, and I'd still rather listen to my Disney soundtracks than just about anything else. Then again, I'm obviously nuts.

I think music as a whole is what is important to Disney movies. The way that music is presented is just as important but I feel Disney has been doing a very good job of adjusting HOW the songs are performed within the context of the story. Tarzan would not have been as a good a movie as it was if they actually had Tarzan sing. Same with Lilo and Stitch... how out of place would it have been for Stitch to bust out with a song while causing a rampage. The characters and tones in Disney movies are becoming darker than they were in the past and having the big chorus numbers would completely nulify that.

Granted, I think Nani and Lilo could have had a duet at the hammock, but that is the only part of the movie where a song by the characters would have fit in my opinion. I am expecting a couple of character numbers in Home on the Range, but nothing up to the scale that was with B&tB and Lion King. Those were epic, where as the more recent movies have been either simple romps or self-finding journies. The face of Disney movies have changed as a whole... and the musical changes is a big reflection of that.

And 'No Way Out' from Brother Bear is on of the most provacative songs ever... not just from Disney, but ever.
