Do you ever see Disney trying to repeal United States vs Paramount Pictures?

For those unaware United States vs Paramount Pictures was a lawsuit in 1948 where anti trust decided that it was illegal for movie studios to own theaters I've been wondering lately with how big Disney is getting do you think they would ever try to get the law repealed? Would it be beneficial to Disney to have it's own branded theaters? E.G This law is what's stopping Disney having it's own branded theaters at its theme parks.

THR put out a great piece in 2018 discussing the issue. Worth a read. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/a...getting-rid-paramount-consent-decrees-1134938

How did they get around the ruling for El Capitan Theatre?

A consent decree is not a law and there are ways to seek approval. The Paramount Consent Decree does not ban theater ownership, but imposed certain regulations. Paramount Pictures is a subsidiary of Viacom which is majority owned by a movie theater chain. Disney doesn’t have Disney branded theaters at the parks because they don’t want to deal with running a movie theater.

And I think they treat the El Capitan like a special project -- mostly for Hollywood premieres and special showings of their own films. It exclusively shows Disney films, and it usually hosts the red-carpet premieres for Disney films. It is on Hollywood Boulevard directly across from the original Grauman's Chinese Theatre and the Dolby Theatre -- so it is in the perfect place for red carpet premieres but also tourist dollars. Disney bought and restored it to its movie palace glory. The building and block also host the Jimmy Kimmel Live show and a Disney studio store with a Ghirardelli ice cream soda fountain and exhibition space for movie memorabilia usually. So it is a special case. And a fun place to visit if you are in L.A. for a tour of Hollywood.

Nope, and doing so would be detrimental for consumers long term.

i think itd be cool if there was a small disney theater at downtown disney. 2 screens. 1 playing new stuff and 1 playing old stuff. thatd be really cool to see Lion King, Rescuers Down Under, Ducktales etc on a big screen.

i think a retro cinema showing classic movies at downtown Disney is a great idea. There are so many classics people may never have had the chance to see on the big screen.

Yeah. I would love to see those cheesy '70s Live Action movies like Million Dollar Duck, North Avenue Irregulars, Snowball Express, and World's Greatest Athlete again on the big screen.

you could make it like secret cinema and have a themed environment for a premium experience watching the marvel films in superhero hq, star wars on a spaceship or Lion King and Jungle book in a jungle environment with appropriate themed drinks and snacks etc. With the back catalogues Disney now own you could have some seasonal themes as well Alien / predator horror series for Christmas, miracle on 34th street / home alone /Mickeys xmas carol for the holidays etc

Well for those that didn't think it would happen, judge has given the greenlight to terminate the decrees. Paving the way for Disney or any other studio to own theater chains.

How can Disney own theater chains when theyre in danger of a HOSTILE TAKEOVER😐

I was being sarcastic due to the other thread and the insistence that there will be one because of the pandemic.
Ah, well it wasn't apparent it was sarcastic. And that thread wasn't mine even though I posted in it. :)

Anyways, Disney can buy a small theater chain even now with the cash they have on hand. Would they do so, probably not. But they do have the cash, and can raise additional capital for such a purchase if needed.
