DISNEYLAND PARK (March 15, 2002) - The Disneyland Park 10th birthday celebrations got under way today with a party that will last until January 5, 2003. With a giant birthday cake stage at the foot of Sleeping Beauty Castle, the evening celebration saw a host of celebrities join in the festivities, as well as discover the all new Disneyland Park show, Minnie's Birthday Surprise.

A Giant Birthday Cake in the Parade
The Wonderful World of Disney Parade is staged everyday at 3 pm in the Disneyland Park. The parade pays tribute to many of Disney's classic animated pictures including Steamboat Willie, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins and The Little Mermaid.
From March 14 to September 29, 2002, a new "giant birthday cake" float will lead the parade. Every day, a child will be chosen by the "head baker" at the start of the parade to join him on the cake as his "special helper". As it makes its way down Main Street, U.S.A., the parade will stop several times, with guests invited to join in the party and sing, dance and try to blow out the candles on the cake.

As the Disneyland Park is where guests can live the magic in 3-D and meet the Disney characters, it seemed only right that Mickey Mouse and his friends should be the stars of the show. At the end of the afternoon, guests were invited to attend a special ceremony that took place on the Birthday Cake stage featuring many favourite Disney characters.
Soon afterwards, Mickey Mouse was again on stage in the company of Roy Disney, Vice Chairman of the Walt Disney Company and Chairman of Walt Disney Feature Animation, who paid tribute to the Disneyland Park.
"Of course, Walt never saw this magnificent park, but his spirit can be felt everywhere you look. The continuing popularity of the Disneyland Park is really a tribute to Walt and his lifelong partner - his brother, my father - Roy. Together, they created magic. And, one of the great things about magic is that it is equally enchanting in any language, in any culture, in any country anywhere in the world. If anyone had any doubts about the universality of entertainment magic, this park proves it."

An all-new show - Minnie's Birthday Surprise
Throughout the evening, celebrities were invited to Videopolis to see an all-new show - Minnie's Birthday Surprise, which runs from March 14, 2002 to January 5, 2003.
To celebrate the tenth birthday of the Disneyland Park, Minnie has prepared a surprise for Mickey, and as guests take their seats, the final dress rehearsal of the celebration is taking place. The stage is a colourful and chaotic scene, with technicians, Minnie, the stage manager, dancers and a host of Disney characters putting the finishing touches to the show preparations. Each part of the show is rehearsed, with favourite characters taking to the stage one after the other, including Goofy, Pluto and Chip and Dale. At the end of the rehearsal, ten children from the audience are invited by the stage manager on to the stage to take part in the show.
All of a sudden, the buzz around the stage is that Mickey is on his way… but he's too early! Props, crew and characters are hurriedly whisked off stage, as Mickey makes his appearance. His arrival is the cue for the start of the show. The curtain goes up, and the ten children reappear on top of a giant birthday cake for a grand finale.

Sharing the magic
Guests were invited to come together at the foot of Sleeping Beauty Castle for a very special occasion. After toasting the Disneyland Park's tenth birthday, Jay Rasulo, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Euro Disney, S.A., invited Mickey to make a symbolic gesture and send some of the magic and enchantment of the Disneyland Park over to the Walt Disney Studios Park. The day's birthday celebration was bought to a close with a magical firework display that lit up the skies above the Disneyland Park.

The Disneyland Park opened its doors on April 12, 1992, and the actual 10th Birthday on April 12, 2002, will be full of many unexpected surprises, courtesy of the Disney characters.

That is really cool. Between the park's 10'th birthday, and the WDS studios next door, now is the time to go! I really hope to get there by early summer!
