What do you think?

  • Ew. Tracking people at Disneyland is creepy. Disney should not be doing this.

I voted "Ew." Not because I'm shocked by tracking (Apple's been tracking me for years), but because we all know where this is headed-- another step away from DL as quirky work of art and a step toward DL as a a soulless, ultra-efficient money vacuum. Borgyland. Bleck.

Playing Devils advocate here, but haven't there always been people arguing that DL was a soulless, ultra-efficient money vacuum?

Yeah, but Disney in general has always been a fascinating blend of art and business. Where it crosses the line varies from person to person. It's like those freemium mobile games. Some of them, like Hearthstone or Pokemon Go, are so fun and charming that you don't mind doing exactly what they want you to do and occasionally pay some cash for bonus stuff-- But then there are others that are just so uninspired and transparent about their money-grab intentions that you just say "Really?" and then you delete them from your phone. Disney's like that on an epic scale (minus any hint of "freemium" :D). I hope DL never reaches the point where the artistry is completely drowned out by the marketing. For some people, I guess it's already there.

A similar discussion popped up once over at Laughingplace and I shared this cartoon spoof of Walt Disney and Disneyland from the late 50s early 60s.
