Seems to be true....

Having planned a lot of our honeymoon way ahead of time, my wife & I hold reservations to some of the "backstage" tours. Unfortunately, yesterday (Sunday the 28th) we received a call from the Comtemporary concierge service informing us that "Inside Animation" was no longer being done.

This was unexpected and disappointing since we were looking forward to the tour.

I wonder if this is a temporary or permanent cancellation.

Oh well, it looks like one less early morning for us at the World....

As posted on www.wdwig.com:

"A 2.5 hour tour offered Wednesday and Fridays at 9:00am (at the Disney-MGM Studios) - review the history of Walt Disney animation and learn how the classics were created. Go behind the scenes and paint your own cell! Minimum age is 16. "

To be honest, you aren't missing much. We found the tour a bit cheesy and too short.

Almost nobody finished painting the cell at the end. They do at least mail it home to you so that you can go back to the park but it was still only half painted!

Also, the tour finished at the Disney Institute. I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

What about the 'ride' that is the animation tour? I mean the one where you wait in line for and happens every 15 minutes with Robin Williams and Walter Cronciet (sp)?

The animation tour with Robin Williams is still there I believe. I really enjoy that tour. Its great. You get to see how they made the films and see the upcoming films as well.

It's still there, but it's not a ride.

I took a similar tour/class when I was a kid called "The Art of Disney" or something to that effect. I suppose I was about 13 at the time. The tour started at MGM and we walked with a guide who pointed out the various forced perspective techniques in work at the queue of Star Tours and New York, then took us to Fantasyland and pointed out similar things, and took us on the Haunted Mansion, but not backstage. After that we were backstage at MK to see the backsides of the Main Street facades. Somewhere along the way we also got to go down onto the floor of the animation building and saw a few of the lower offices and screening rooms down there All the animators were on their lunchbreak when we went in, but you could see the cels from "Pocahontas" they were working on that day. There wasn't anything spectacular down there, but it was VERY fun to see all the odd bits of plastic inspiration the animators put on their desks. Lots of japanimation action figures, I noticed. The tour ended up at the Disney Institute, or whatever was there before the DI, and we got a lesson in sketching Mickey's head (just pencils and the special books they issued us.) It was a very fun class, and although I'm not sure it was offered for people over 16 it might be your ticket down onto the floor of Animation.
