Disney's America

This park was originally planned for I think Virginia, but the people didn't want it and it got some bad press about slavery attractions.

I don't think it'll ever get built as it was planned, but I think elements of it will show up in parks.

Wasn't this the park that Disney was planning for somewhere in Virginia? As I recall either near Williamsburg or DC. It got killed because the people of Virginia couldn't see any reason for Disney to build a park about American History when they have the real thing all over the place.

Actually, portions of it ended up as inspiration for Disney's California Adventure. Paradise Pier borrowed from the state fair concept in Disney's America. I remember seeing concept art that included the Sun Wheel, right down the the styling of the face on the sun.

This is probably one of the greatest Disney projects that never came to fruition. I would've loved this park. There are a few good websites that deal w/ the park, here they are:

Michael Eisner's passion - Disney's America

Disney's America

The second has some concept art. Doesn't Victory Field look suspiciously like DCA's Soarin' Over California show building?

http://www.mouseplanet.com/dca/america.htm

It seems that DCA was Disney's America with a new theme. If you read the article from a while back it goes in to explaining how easy it would have been to change DCA to America (and make it more popular).

regardless of where it would have been built, i feel this would have been an amazing park and experience and still deserves to be built in some way shape or form. as to why it didnt go through i simply cant understand..? this would have been the perfect blend of disney magic, history, education, and americana.

whoever turned this project down is an idiot, and for this once i actually have to support eisner in wanting to create this park.. it would have been great.

Refresh my memory, but is this the same park that garnered all that controversy a while back when it was first proposed due to the plans of building near Civil War parks and memorials? Historians were horrified by the Disneyfication of American history as I recall. Is this that same park or something different?

The reason they didnt build the park was cause of all the traffic that it would bring. So instead of building Disney, the built a hugh shopping center, that brings more traffic than the park would of brought.

Although I like the idea of the park, I'm not sure about the idea of putting it in DC.

I visited DC once, and it's mostly the goverment/lawyer type, and I don't think this group fits with the Disney image. How about bringing it to Wisconsin, Disney? :animwink:

Rewind...what did you find on ebay, still confused.
On to Disney's America...I think if Eisner somehow remains in power maybe one day as the 3rd park in California or maybe in Florida.
This was his special project. His park.
Having said that I wonder if it's such a great idea in this day and age.
Would this park become a trerrorist target?
I don't want to open a big debate or tread on anyone's toes, but America & Disney? Not the safest feeling in the world with everything going on in the world today.
Just my opinion.

Ahem, I go to school in D.C. :)

Anyways, even though I think Disney's America would have been cool (being so close and all), the cilimate is just not suitable for it!

I know that Paris and Tokoyo both have their share of cold weather, but a Virginia park would be pretty much pointless in the winter months. It may look cool, but walking around Disney in the snow, just isn't my thing.

Bottom Line is that Disney America is not gonna happen! Much of the ideas that went into the park are already present in DCA.

I'm sorry.. I didn't mean to make it sound like everyone there was a lawyer. What I meant was, I don't think the feel of Washington D.C. is a Disney feel. I know DC attracts tourists, but I really don't think they're the same kind that Disney does. I think DC should be more about the historic buildings, and about our government.

This is just my opinion.

i think the idea for this park is great, a whole fresh new Disney concept that has many different possible directions Disney could have followed. However, if a park sch as this was built i don't think it would be suitable to build on a new US area. It should be built in California or Florida for the simple reason that it will detract visitors from these two parks, where as if built in Florida or California it is most likely guests would visit the other parks in these areas, then visitor numbers would be up and Disney would have more money to make future developments/make new attractions in the old parks/refurbish.

Oh, don't worry...I didn't take offense!:)

However, if Disney were to make a park about America, D.C./ Virginia is very logical for the following reasons:

-Virginia is where the first English settlement was founded in America in 1607.
-D.C. is the CAPITAL of our nation. All major decisions that effect America as a country are made here
-Virginia is the home of many historical figures and homes (including Montichello and Mount Vernon)

So, as you can see this area really is a major part of the foundation of our nation.

Of course it is! I have visited many of those places, and I know what you mean. I guess I don't really understand the concept of this park. DC just doesn't seem to have the same tourists as Disney.. but I guess this is different.
