We are Disney World veterans, but have never been to Disneyland, so we are having a hard time dealing with wanting to stay on property but also not wanting to spend $338 a night for Pixar Pier! Does anybody know when the prices drop or have other suggestions? Any other ideas of what to do in LA, perhaps related to Disney history? We are there starting 9/23/18 for a week (3 days in the parks).

Stay off property, Disneyland is a LOT different than WDW. There are many good/great Hotels within walking distance to the Main Entrance Gates. Check out the Springhill Suites by Marriott at corner of Harbor and Katella (not the one on Ball Road), new Hotel with a great rooftop pool area with an awesome view of the Fireworks.

As for what else to do.. Knott's Berry Farm is very close, and Walt Disney and his staff spent a lot of time there researching things like queues when building Disneyland.

Check out Walt's Barn in Griffith Park.

I always suggest the California Adventure Resort. Yes it's pricy but you get your own entrance to DCA plus the extra magic hour and you get the Disney immersion. The further off property you go, the worse it gets, so don't stray to far.

We always stay at the Homewood Suites by the Harbor Disney Parking. Taking a Disneyland shuttle from that parking lot is free, which is awesome because it's only a short walk from the hotel.

I recommend the beach! That's always fun, especially from an Arizonian.

Also, keep in mind that if you do plan on visiting LA from Anaheim and are traveling by car, that trip can take up to two hours, traffic depending.
