Walt Disney Co. will place its brand on more films this year to try to attract broader audiences, the Wall Street Journal reported. Twelve of the 22 films Disney has planned for 2003 will be released under the Walt Disney Pictures label, an increase from past years when about one-third of its films included the logo, the newspaper said. The remaining movies will carry Disney's Touchstone Pictures brand. Disney executives compared the Disney banner to the "Good Housekeeping seal of approval," adding that it indicates whether a film has family appeal. By expanding brand use, the studio seeks to avoid being pigeonholed and instead reach broader demographics, the newspaper said, citing Disney Studios Chairman Richard Cook. Disney's The Princess Diaries was a 2001 hit among teenage girls, an atypical audience for Disney, the newspaper said. Disney hopes to achieve similar success with its Lizzie McGuire movie, which it will release under the Disney name.
