Disney to Cut Another 250 Jobs at Animation Unit, WSJ Reports
Burbank, California, March 18 (Bloomberg) -- Walt Disney Co.
will cut another 250 jobs at its animation unit over the next
year, the Wall Street Journal reported without citing sources.
Disney has already reduced the headcount at the unit to 1,350
employees from a high of more than 2,200 in 1999, the paper said.
The new cuts will reduce the number to between about 1,000 and
1,100, the paper said. The cuts will be primarily at Disney's
animation facility in Burbank, California, the Journal said.
The studio wants to lower the cost of animated movies, which
have skyrocketed because of demand for top animators and the
investment in technology for computer animation, the Journal
reported.
Over the past two years, Disney has been cutting salaries at
its animation department by as much as 50 percent as contracts
have come up for renewal, the paper said.
