Disney Theatre

I just went to New York the other day and saw Beauty and the Beast. I know that Disney is the major driving force in the Times Square area for the clean up effort, since they have purchased a large amount of property at the Broadway, 42nd St intersection. i.e The New Amsterdam theater, SFX, the Disney Store, ESPN Zone etc. The question I have now is since Disney has put so much time and effort into full scale Broadway musicals such as Beauty and the Beast, Aida, and The Lion King, and they are all scheduled to go out on National tours soon like every other Broadway show.(Actually, beauty already it) It seems like a natural progression and fit for a place like Downtown Disney West Side to build a theatre and bring these shows in even if it is on a rotating basis. I understand that tickets for Broadway type shows are high. Lion King on Broadway goes for up to $100. National Tour prices are somewhat lower though and Cirque Du Soleil already is charging $70 plus for tickets and being rather sucessful. Also these shows are all proven products each having won or been nominated for some Tony awards. Why wouldn't Disney bring a proven bankable and entertaining asset to their park considering the audience to these shows is not limited to New York and would still draw well if showing in two places at one time.

Perfect sense...

This idea makes a lot of sense to me, but I am from Columbus OH and am not familiar with the Orlando Theatre Scene. It might cause problems with them, and depending on the average stay of the shows it might take a mighty long time to recoup the money to build the venue, plus you have to remember that on non-disney shows I would think they would have to shell out a serious amount of ticket revenue to the visiting shows, and they probably would be making more money per person if you were somewhere else on WDW property spending money:animwink:

Shows

I'm not sure if they would necessarily have to get any outside shows to come in. They already have to three proven shows and I would guess that they have a few more on the drawing board. I think extended runs for Disney shows like a couple of months would not be out of the question for the shows since you wouldn't be oversaturating the market when 90% of the market is tourist based anyway. On the Orlando Theatre Community point I understand it but I'm not sure it would make too much difference. Just like they don't take Universal or Wet and Wilds interests into consideration when they build a new attraction or water ride I don't think they would worry to much about Orlando Theater business being affected either. Not saying it's right but it is business

broadway

Another thing is they could use it as a development center for the shows they are looking to send to Broadway. It would be a lot cheaper and easier to test a new show and rehearse it in their own controlled environment rather than in NY and they could make changes based on audience response which they could also have some control over. Something which is nearly impossible in the tough world of new york theatre. There are few things in the world more embarrassing or as expensive as a Broadway Flop. Just ask Paul Simon

Good Point

True...

And I'm sure if they could keep the shows running on a schedule so that if there was any dead time it would be in Mid-January through early March, when they are traditionally slow and lots of things are down for rehab anyway.

question

Has anyone seen the Disney Musicals on Broadway, if so what did you think of them and do you think they would work in a forum such as a theatre in WDW

I´ve seen The Lion King in Broadway (paid $125.00 in sept.99 from a broker of course), and absolutely loved it! We were seating in third row and we cried with it. It was extremely amazing, the whole thing, the production, the play, the theater!!

I also saw Beauty and the Beast, but not in Broadway, I saw it in Tampa, and also loved it, the special effects were great!
:)

However, my favorite is still Phantom of the Opera... ;) :)
