Disney that could have been, should have been, or almost was.

I've been talking with some friends, and we were talking about old urban legends about plans that were rumored, or maybe just wishful thinking, and I thought is start a thread here to hear your favorites.

Some of mine were Beastly Kingdom, and while I think it was just wishful thinking, the idea that Discovery island could have been a cool "Lost" island theme attraction.

How the area of Muppet*Vision would have looked liked if the idea went through...

Since we're wishing for things, if only the parks had about half the attendance whenever we visit. . .

That's real magic. Getting rid of the crowds.

A lot of cool projects were never built.

The Neverland Files used to be a nice resource for unbuilt Disney projects. Here is an archive of the site:
https://web.archive.org/web/20130528133931/http://www.theneverlandfiles.com/tnf

In reading through the projects, I can't help but think how much time, effort, and most importantly money have been put into the planning, rendering, etc. for each of these ideas. It seems to me that if they would have spent half as much of their resources on sticking to one idea or going with an idea that was already drawn up, many of the projects listed would be in place today.

One of my very favorite quotes seems to be directly applicable here - "Many of us spend half of our time wishing for things we could have if we didn't spend half our time wishing." Alexander Woollcott

A good many of them were also announced by Disney as something that would be happening.

There were plans to add a New Orleans area to the Empress Lilly, embedding it in a fully themed Southern surrounding. It looks absolutely divine.

Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. Nuff said.
I agree. But of course this would have meant the end of Disney's interest in theme parks and animation in favor of community building (urban planning). This was Walt's passion near the end of his life and were he a bit younger or healthier, the Disney legacy would be far different than it is today. Greater, IMO.

I was always really interested in Great America bc it was going to be built an hour from where I grew up. Being that close to a disney park would have been amazing!

You mean Disney's America right?
Because There was to be a 3rd version of the Marriott Great America park in Maryland in the 70's that was to be built but got cancelled.
