Disney Springs mixed emotions...

We have been going to and enjoying DTD since our first trip in 1983. We have watched it grow, change names, change its focus with PI and Westside, and wondered about the future with Hyperion Wharf plans that fizzled. Now Disney Springs is going to completely change it, probably for the better, but whatever intimacy and charm it has left may be lost in the expansion. I certainly don't like the name change, and truly hope it does not become just another mall.
What do you think about the plans for Disney Springs?

There is no reason to build "just another mall." We already have malls in Orlando and most people have malls at home. So many shop online, too. Who would go there except a few people who live near the parks?

They have to make it unique.

I like the new name. Always thought DTD was a dumb name and the idea of a wharf was...very unappealing.

I am hoping for a pretty place with wide open spaces and a light, airy feeling. Kind of high hopes. The last thing we need is another crowded outdoor shopping area.

We will see how it turns out. :)

The wide open spaces and light, airy feeling sounds good. I have high hopes it will become something very special.
I'd name it "Waterside at Disney," or "Disney's Waterside Promenade" or something like that, just off the top of my head.

I think going with Disney Springs is a way to tie into Saratoga Springs and probably make folks staying there feel more connected to that district.

Its actually not going to be that airy and open-spaced -- if you have seen the drawings and blueprints (google, they are available all over the place) it is going to be a very greatly increased shopping area, and is VERY much designed to bring in the locals from around Celebration and other areas, more than being geared for Resort guests...
I kind of like it. Its the direction DTD has been going for years now, as the locals head to the movie theater and dinner and then look for something else to do while they are still there. As a PT Celebration resident, I welcome anything in my backyard that doesn't need a drive into Orlando or Kissimmee....

"The story of Disney Springs begins at our new Town Center, which is oriented around a series of bubbling natural springs that first attracted settlers to the area. From there, the town grew to encompass three additional neighborhoods: The Landing, Marketplace and West Side – each with its own distinct charm and atmosphere. For more about each of these districts, click here.
Once complete, Disney Springs will expand from 75 to more than 150 shopping, dining and entertainment venues, featuring some of the world’s most iconic brands and restaurants. Construction is set to begin next month. The expansion will open in phases and we expect to complete our development in 2016."

I totally get the name springs and am on board for that. (plus when people think of springs it tends to illicit a concept of clean water or spring water we are hit with ads for each day already. plus I'd love bubbling springs as a nice centerpiece

it's this second part that troubles me. "iconic" brands and restaurants smells of chain stores to me. I really hope we don't end up with a big area of iconic names like mcdonalds Wendy's and burger king back to back.

(thy said though I'd love to somehow find a way to get cheeseburgers in paradise in Disney, just so buffett could be everywhere. plus personally kthink cheeseburgers is better of the Buffett franchise, owned by outback steakhouse it's basically that but tropical with live music at nights and surprisingly not overcharging on drinks either. being in jersey my only two options are to drive to seacaucus or to Philly, personally I'd rather stay in the empty lot where Donovan's reef was in sea bright NJ then go to either spot even though I live the chain)

Um, there used to be a huge McDonalds at the marketplace -- rumor has it that their contract was not renewed because of a strained relationship with DisneyInc, and because they were taking a lot of business away from Disney quickservice restaurants at DTD...
I think you WILL indeed see things like Coach, Apple, etc in the new retail area....

Yeah, I think those are a real possibility, along with standard mall fare like Bath and Body Works, Footlocker, GNC and others, but I hope not.

My only question is how many more Springs will there be? Saratoga, Coronado, Disney :p

they will never have enough. I blame winnie the pooh. Tigger was just way to popular and so they always need to make more. I mean at least rubber is in great supply but only the tops are made out of rubber, the bottoms are made outta ....
