Disney Springs Closing Routine?

I'm a local, and it's been a hot minute since I last wandered the late-night scene at Disney Springs. I was there recently, up until their official closing time, and I noticed that once closing time hits, Disney cast members and security are out trying to corral everyone to the exits. This is very new to me. I don't really have a problem with it; I'm just curious to know when this became a thing and why it was implemented. Usually, the individual stores and restaurants closing gave people reason enough to leave the premises.
