Disney Says Plans To Expand Hong Kong Theme Park

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

HONG KONG (AP)--Hong Kong Disneyland doesn't open until September, but officials are already talking about expanding the theme park.

The park has room to add new attractions after it opens on Sept. 12, Disney spokeswoman Esther Wong said. "We have not fully used up our land yet," she said.

But Wong declined to give a timetable or other details for the plan, saying that the company is focusing on a successful opening.

On Wednesday, Hong Kong's financial chief, Henry Tang, told reporters that Disney plans to add more attractions so that visitors will return to the park in its second or third year of operation.

The park is a joint venture between the Hong Kong government and the Walt Disney Co. (DIS). It is being built on reclaimed land on outlying Lantau Island. Officials say the park is a key part of Hong Kong's plan to become a prime destination for vacationing families.

If you look at the pop-up map at Epcot, they already have (although not under construction) the Autopia (running outside the park behind Space Mt) and a logo for PotC near the RR tracks in Adventureland.

There is no chance of Hong Kong disney failing. I mean it was cheap to build. Ocean Park has no way to compete. Perfect location. And it will also be a nice little capitalist pleasure for a communist government.

That is one reason I am confused. If China is communist, then why allow something like Disney be built? But then again I remember 2 things.
1. Hong Kong was owned by Britian until 1997.
2. The Chinese government realises that pure communism doesn't work and has yet to work so the best thing to do is actually add capitalist ideas to balance the whole thing out.

But of course, this is no longer the cold war and the US isn't out to stop communism no matter what (now it is terrorism) so it shouldn't really matter.

Speck, do you know of any place that has a photo of this pop-up model? I would love to see it, but I rarely make it to Epcot. Money, ya know? ;)
