Disney Puts Old Friends to Work for 'Lilo'

(Hollywood Reporter) -- Posters and billboards for the Walt Disney Co.'s upcoming animated "Lilo & Stitch" show the little blue alien Stitch surrounded by Pinocchio, Dopey, Tinker Bell and other characters from the Disney vaults. "There's One in Every Family," reads the tagline. In an unprecedented all-out effort to launch "Lilo & Stitch," opening Friday, Disney is surrounding its newest animated character, Stitch -- an original with no previous name identification -- with a dozen characters from the studio's fabled past. The campaign was overseen by Disney marketing president Oren Aviv and executive vp worldwide marketing Fred Tio, who fo-cuses on animated Disney releases. "Lilo & Stitch" centers on an Elvis-loving Hawaiian girl, Lilo, and her alien sidekick Stitch, a blue, gremlin like character. "Coming out of the movie, we realized we had a potentially clas-sic Disney character in Stitch," Aviv said. "Because the movie's different and doesn't follow a formula, we thought it would be useful to come up with a way to show that Stitch was in the pantheon of classic Disney characters."
