Debuting with iTunes as its exclusive launch provider, Disney Movies Anywhere is a simple, streamlined way to manage and enjoy your digital collection of Disney, Pixar, and Marvel movies on multiple devices. Plus, for a limited time, you’ll receive a free digital copy of Disney•Pixar’sThe Incredibles when you sign up and connect your iTunes account.

Why will this make your life easier? It collects all your eligible Disney digital entitlements – whether you redeemed them from a Digital Copy code or purchased them in iTunes – so you can have access to them on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple TV, as well as on your personal computer (Mac and Windows machines).

Here’s how it works:

  1. Download the free Disney Movies Anywhere app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch (iOS 7 or higher). You can also sign up through DisneyMoviesAnywhere.com. Create an account—in some cases you can use your existing Disney website credentials such as Disney Infinity, Disney Movie Rewards, or ESPN—to log in and get started. (Right now, Disney Movies Anywhere is only available in the U.S. and account holders must be at least 13 years of age.)
  2. Immediately, any Disney Digital Copy codes you’ve previously registered with a Disney Movies Rewards account will show up in your new Disney digital movie locker through Disney Movies Anywhere.
  3. Follow the simple steps to connect your iTunes account to your Disney Movies Anywhere account, and eligible titles you previously purchased from iTunes or redeemed in iTunes with a Digital Copy code will be accessible in both your Disney Movies Anywhere locker and your iTunes account. This is also how you get your free digital copy of The Incredibles—by connecting your iTunes account.
  4. Do you have any previously unredeemed Disney, Pixar, or Marvel Digital Copy codes floating around in the DVD or Blu-ray cases on your shelf? You can register eligible codes in Disney Movies Anywhere to expand your digital collection—you’ll also earn Disney Movies Rewards for these and for any digital purchases made through iTunes going forward.
  5. Commence downloading, streaming, browsing and buying! You can download a movie to up to eight devices at a time, and you can stream simultaneously on two. You can also explore exclusive original content in the Disney Movies Anywhere app or website.
Disney Movies Anywhere works on a flexible Disney technology, called KeyChest, that lets Disney Movies Anywhere work with a variety of digital providers and devices as they are added to the Disney Movies Anywhere program. So get started with iTunes today, and stay tuned for more news and announcements in the future!

This definitely seems like a great idea. I just downloaded the app. I never really bothered with my digital copies but I think this sort of centralized integration will definitely get me more interested in using the digital copies. If you sign up early you also get a free digital copy of The Incredibles.

Someone explain digital copies to me. How are they different from what is on the DVD or Blu-Ray (format-wise), and how much space they take up. I have never bothered, because I thought it might take a lot of space.
And how does the resolution of Digital HD compare with that of DVD or Bu-Ray?

Finally, will this app give you a Blu-Ray quality film? Will it download the movie to your phone, or stream it?

And are the movies free, or just the app?

Streaming and digital copies will not give you anything close to true "Blu-ray" quality. If you want that, you'll need the Blu-ray.

No one has the capability to stream files of that size on computers and mobile devices. At least not for the forseeable future.

You can stream or download. Movies are not free, but are included with some DVDs and Blu-rays. The advantage in digit copies is when you're going somewhere without access to your player and discs. For me, I use digital copies on long flights.

OK, so it takes less space and not as clear as Blu-ray. But why did Disney call it HD, then? Was it the minimum quality HD (like less pixels)?

And does a typical 2-hour digital movie take a lot of space? Is it different by device (say, on an iPhone than on an iPad or PC)? I ask because I have had some song videos on my iPhone that I had to delete (kept only on the computer's iTunes) because they were space hogs. That is why I have never downloaded a movie on iTunes. I am afraid it would take up crazy space, especially if I would want to keep it.

HD just means it reaches a certain resolution, but you probably wouldn't want to download HD onto a mobile device due to file size and it being negated by small screen size.

They are going to be large files (The Avengers is 2.48 GB in standard definition) but you don't have to keep them on the device forever. You can download them from the app when you know you'll want to watch the film or stream if you have a strong, steady data connection.
