Disney is prepared for storms

I guess you can worry less when a big storm rolls in during your vacation...

The National Weather Service today will recognize Walt Disney World for the preparations it has made for severe weather.

Disney World is the first theme park and resort to receive the StormReady community distinction. The attraction joins more than 1,000 communities across the country that are part of the weather service program.

"The public recognition is very important to our cast members and our guests because it demonstrates the hard work that goes on here," Disney spokesman Jacob DiPietre said. "It also reassures our guests that safety and security are always a top priority."

The weather service program, which was launched in 1999, recognizes communities that have worked with the weather service to develop storm-preparedness programs. Disney World operates its own emergency operations center and an amateur radio club, which are capable of broadcasting weather warnings round the clock.

StormReady locations are capable of receiving government severe weather warnings by more than one means.

"StormReady helps communities improve communication and safety skills needed to save lives -- before, during and after the event," said Bill Proenza, director of the weather service's southern region.

Disney is prepared again

Yeah Disney is usually very good about our hurricanes last year I had reservations the day one was suppose to hit in orlando and I called the day before and cancelled and there were no fees or anything because of the impending storm.

Thats reassuring - but I'd rather not see any storms at WDW while we're there in August
I agree with you since we'll be there in August too.
It's good to know that they prepared.

I stayed home for one hurricane and vowed to never do it again. Now, when a hurricane is approaching I go to WDW and thanks to all of you who cancel your reservation, I get a room at the last minute. At thanks to WDW, I have been able to extend my trips, based on my status as being in the storm's path, until my power at home goes back on. Even on the two occasions that the storm went through WDW we never lost power and the parks were only closed for 1 day. With kids, it really is the best place to be during the storm.

I have tempted the strom gods a few times 3 or 4 and gone in late Sept/early Oct and have avoid by some times as little as a few days. I am going back this year also right during that time. The nice thing about all this "worst storm season ever" stuff is that means the attendance will be down while I am there. I agree I would rather be no place during the storm other then at WDW. My nieces were caught last year and stuck in the room for a day and had a GREAT time. Of course I would rather just grab a pouncho and go to the parks.....just a little wind and rain;-) (that is not making light of all the lives that have been lost in any past storms that is just me being a over the top theme park geek)

Won't all of WDW already be underwater before the end of storm season this year anyways -- damn you global warming.

All I know is it's someone else's turn. We "hosted" the flood water last year. Hopefully it won't be WDW cause being underwater sux.

Only ever had one hurricane hit while I was at Disney and that was Hurricane Erin in 1995.
As far as I remember by the time it reached Disney and where I was staying at the Sheraton Lakeside on 192 near Splendid China it was no more than a lot of rain and strong winds.
Are the Sheraton and Splendid China still there, its been a long time since I last visited that area?

While I am glad that Disney is ready for any hurricanes that are coming, I would REALLY be glad if they just stayed away during September, lol

Spending an entire day inside of your hotel room, no matter if it is Disney or not, just isn't good times.

I am going to be staying in a room at the Pop Century with 3 other women....I was thinking how horrible that would be to be stuck in a small room with 4 women! Glad hurricane season will be over by the time I make it down there!
