After recently announcing the live-action Peter Pan spin-off Tink starring Reese Witherspoon, Disney thought it might go through their rolodex of other side-characters they can build a live-action feature out of and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, that character will be the Slavic black god Chernobog, better known as the iconic winged devil from the “Night on Bald Mountain” segment of 1940’s Fantasia.

Partially modeled after Dracula actor Bela Lugosi, Chernobog featured in symphonic anthology film Fantasia‘s grand finale sequence based around composer Modest Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain,” in which the giant demonic figure awakens at the stroke of midnight, spreading evil spirits throughout the land until they are banished by a bright dawn ushered in by Franz Schubert’s Ave Maria. Of all of Walt Disney’s creations, Chernobog is perhaps the most menacing and went on to inspire many a heavy metal album cover as well as Darkness in Ridley Scott’s Legend.

Dark fantasy specialists Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Dracula Untold, The Last Witch Hunter, Gods of Egypt) will write the script and produce the live-action Night on Bald Mountain, which is in early development at the studio with no director currently attached.

Okay, so this is interesting. What defeated Chernobog in Fantasia was the sound of church bells and a group of nuns carrying candles. So, will Christianity defeat him in this live-action version?

That sounds unlikely, but if Disney went there, I'd bet the audience would be huge. Look at the recent spate of Christian-based movies, many of which were successful. Sure, they had tiny budgets, but there certainly audiences for them.

And the first Narnia film (The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe) was very successful too. A blockbuster, I believe.

Again, interesting...

If that's the way they write it, I'd be 'in' and I'm not very religious. Anyway, this could be a really interesting adaptation. I could see an 'all religions symbolically band together' to defeat evil. I don't think Disney would be excluding any faiths. I hope they have the guts to do the story 'right'.

I can see it now..."And starring Johnny Depp as Chernabog." He'll be quirky, a little bit fun, have a bit of Keith Richards in him and have a scene with Helena Bonham Carter...oops, wrong. That'd be the Tim Burton "Dumbo".

Any updates speaking of the Live-Action Dumbo? I'm still waiting for a teaser poster.
