Disney in Brazil

Hey guys

I know that's probably a nasty rumor, but I wanted to know your opinion about it.

There are some shady news going on here in Brazil saying that Disney might be bringing a huge operational center to Curitiba, the city I live in. Not only it would have a Disneyland park, but also a modern midia center that would distribute the signals of Disney Channel, HBO Channels, ESPN International, ESPN Brasil to Brazil and Latin America.

What do you think? Any chance that any of it is true?

Yea I don't think Disney will ever do this, it would affect WDW attendance.

Wouldn't have DLP, TDL, HKDL, and now Shanghai DL have affected attendance here at WDW?

I still think it won't happen anytime soon. Since there will be a Shanghai Disneyland(unfortunately... they should to fix what they have now then a open a completely new park.) Anyway, since there will be a Shanghai DL then I'm pretty sure Disneyland Brazil won't happen for decades. 15 years the least.

I think it's likely that media center will be built, but no Disneyland. In the rare event of a South American Disneyland being in the works, it's likely to be built in Chile or Argentina.

Not really. Disneyland primarily pulls locals, west coasters, and Mexicans. WDW pulls from the U.S., and all over Latin America as well as the rest of the world (mainly the UK).

The French don't make a huge % of visitors to WDW. WDW doesn't pull much at all from HK or will they from Shanghai.

Placing a park anywhere in Central or South America would be foolish as that would draw a good percentage of travelers from WDW. Right now, the Latin market has helped keep WDW visitor numbers up.

You might see some sort of media complex built with ESPN continuing to target the Latin market and expansion of worldwide soccer/football coverage.

Its not completely impossible.

Everything besides the park could go in rather quickly, but I would say the park would be at least a few years away from even being announced. The company is spending too much money elsewhere to start even real planning on another park before then.

According to the disneyandmore blog, Australia was considered about 2 years ago....

You forgot Antarctica (Penguins need a theme park too!)

There was a rumor on here recently that Brazil would be the next country pavillion added to EPCOT's World Showcase.

It could be that Disney is developing business relationships in Brazil.

Not really. WDW has always maintained its attendance pretty well. They wouldn't put a theme park so close to another that it would effect its attendance dratically. With this Shanghai park I think they said each resort would offer something different sorta like how Anaheim is a way different experience than WDW.

Brazil doesn't seem like a great idea though imo.

As I said on another thread where these rumors were discussed even though the idea of a Disney Park a few hundred miles from my place is exciting, I just don't like it.

I think this massive worldwide expansion that has been going on for the past decade or so can hurt the quality of the already-existing parks, I even think some people in these boards would argue such a thing has already taken place.

I think the yearly trips from Brazil are as much of a rite of passage as an excuse to visit a theme park. A park in Brazil probably wouldn't affect the tour groups that much.

Agreed, much like DLP hasn't slowed UK tourism to WDW that much, because it's still a MUCH smaller resort and a different atmosphere

If this does ever happen, I doubt we'd see it within the next ten years. Look at the time between new resorts:

1955 - Disneyland
1971 - WDW
1983 - Tokyo
1992 - Paris
2005 - Hong Kong
~2014 - Shanghai

Never less than 9 years apart. If this pattern holds, we wouldn't see a 7th property until 2023 () at the earliest, with an announcement around 2018.

Who knows what global economic conditions will look like by 2023. By then, Brazil may be a highly desirable market, or some other market might be more lucrative.

I still think the next park should be in the midwest, preferably Minnesota. It just...makes good economic sense...you know? :D

What many on this board forget is that investment in a Disney Park in any part of the world is not a stand alone investment by Disney. Opening a Disneyland in Shanghai will not only exposed millions of new people to Disney Parks, but also open the market even more for other Disney products such as TV, movies, toys, video games, etc. This is where Disney is going to increase revenue. Additional revenue for the Disney Company will than allow the existing parks to expand and add new attractions. I am sure this is true for Shanghai, but I do not know if it would apply to Brazil or not.

I'm pretty sure that Brazil is much closer to WDW than any of these places. WDW draw a huge amount of people from Brazil each year, put a park in Brazil and these people will not come and spend $$$$ in WDW.

I disagree, if they put 3-4 parks in Brazil, then it might change

Couldn't agree more!

As I said, it's just a rumor. Just wanted to know what you guys think. Personally, I think that what attracts so many Brazilians to Orlando isn't only the opportunity to go to Disney. Is also that feeling of being in US and immersed in it's culture. It may sound silly, but sometimes it's almost like being inside a movie. I don't know how it works in other countries, but i think a Disneyland in Brazil wouldn't be "american" enough to most people.
