Disney dollars

What is the advantage of having Disney dollars? :shrug:


I have read the numberous threads and none answer this question. In one thread someone said that you get change in US dollars. People said they bought them for their kids. I would thinks kids could lose that the same way as a US bill.

My Disney visa has an accumulation of Disney dollars I can cash in and get.

There is no real advantage. Basically, they are just cute to have. Since they are only good at Disney parks (not sure about the Disney Store anymore), they are a cool souvenir or gift for your favorite Disney fan.

Of course, you can spend it (and lose it) just like cash anywhere at Disney Parks.

The Disney Visa card accumulates "rewards" points which must be converted to what is essentially a gift card to be used. They don't ever give you actual Disney dollar bills. I think Chase only calls them "dollars" because they are converted 1:1 once redeemed to the gift card which does expire eventually. Personally, I prefer a rewards card that give me back money as a credit to my account - sure alot easier.

When you use your Disney dollars you do get change back in money not Disney dollars. My family and friends know that for me Disney dollars is always a great gift because then I can spend them on whatever I want when we are in Disney. If you have kids they are great also because you can give them so much in Disney dollars as their spending money in the stores instead of using your rewards card. ºoº

Several months prior to our trip, I will start buying Disney dollars at the Disney Store. This has several advantages. It is like a savings account since they can only be used at WDW, DL, or the Disney Store. It also helps keep the charges to a minimum on the Disney Visa.

Each day we pick a character of the day and the first to see him/her wins a Disney Dollar. Disney Dollars are essential for every trip. The big advantage is they are "forced" savings. They cannot be used before the trip on silly things like groceries, mortgage, insurance etc.

Disney Dollars are a great way to teach your kids to save money.

If your child does a special chore such as washing your car, you can pay them in Disney Dollars. They can't rush downtown to the nearest candy store and spend them, but are instead forced to save them until your Disney vacation. Once you get to the Disney Parks, they can now learn how to spend the Disney Dollars on the gift of their choice. They also learn that once the Disney Dollars are spent, that's it, so they learn to spend their money a little wiser and buy things they really want or need and not just spend it silly things.

I too use them as a sort of savings account. If I have a trip coming up, I ask for them for my b-day, Christmas, etc. If someone gives me cash, I tend to spend it.

From personal experience, these are great for kids. They can only spend them in the parks and it puts them more into the magic. It makes them feel older and more mature. One cool thing that a family friend did for the younger kids in my family was giving them the amount of Disney dollars of the age that they were turning, i.e. turning 7= 7 Disney dollars.

We got some Disney Dollars for our kids for our upcoming trip. It's a fun way to help them start to learn about saving, spending, etc.

Also: If you know someone who has an upcoming Disney vacation, Disney Dollars make a great Birthday and/or Christmas present. It helps remind them of their upcoming magical vacation.
