Disney College Program recruiters are visiting Missouri State University today and Wednesday to seek student candidates for internships in The Walt Disney Co.
Students will have a chance to meet with recruiters today at 4 p.m. or Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Glass Hall 112. Students who can’t attend these sessions can visit www.disneycollegeprogram.com/epresentation.
The program provides an opportunity for students to network and learn from Disney leaders, gain real-world experience working in the theme parks and resorts and create lasting friendships with other college students from around the nation and world, according to the press release.
Possible courses listed in the press release include College Program Practicum, Communications Course, Hospitality Management Course, Experiential Learning for the 21st Century, Human Resource Management Course, Organizational Leadership Course, and Marketing You: Personal and Career Development Strategies.
Students can gain experience through jobs in attractions, hospitality, housekeeping, life guarding, merchandise, park greeter, quick-service restaurants, recreation and transportation; in culinary and custodial departments; and as park greeters, according to the press release.
Students are housed in one-to four-bedroom apartments near the Disney property, and the cost is deducted from the weekly paycheck.
Jon Santangelo, a Disney College Program representative, said this program is a great experience overall because it helps students grow socially and learn how to interact in business situations. “You also gain experience by working and interacting with guests and by living on site,” Santangelo said. “Pay for most of the on-site jobs was around $6.40.” Santangelo said students are scheduled to work for a minimum of 30 hours a week and maybe more on holidays. They can request to work more to get overtime. He said he worked between 35 and 40 hours during an average week.
“If anyone has any interest in working for Disney, ESPN, ABC or any associated company, this is a good way to get you foot in the door,” Santangelo said. Santangelo said this program has been in place for the past 25 years. “I strongly encourage anyone who is interested in this opportunity to attend one of the information sessions or go online and watch the presenation,” Santangelo said. Devon Burch, a senior in marketing, said participating in the program is a good job opportunity, and it gave her experience and direction in her career.
Burch said that this internship was not only a great experience but it was a lot of fun. “Student that have completed this internship are definitely at a big advantage over students who have not been a part of the company before,” Burch said. “This is something that the Walt Disney Corporation looks at when they are hiring employees.”
