>>Five years ago, with much fanfare, Disney started a program in which Anaheim sixth graders who fulfilled a community service project got free tickets to Disneyland.

A promotional video featuring Mickey himself at an Anaheim school captured the excitement: Two students smile and hold a sign bearing the program’s name, “Happiest Class on Earth,” as they say “I’m in sixth grade and I’m going to Disneyland!”

The giveaway, launched to kick off Disneyland’s 60th anniversary, was slated to last 10 years.

Now, one pandemic later, Disney is quietly ending the “Happiest Class” program.

The company also is ending a similar, much longer arrangement with Walt Disney Elementary in Anaheim – a school that Disney himself reportedly used to visit after it was renamed in his honor. A Disney official said the agreement with Walt Disney Elementary was folded into the “Happiest Class” program five years ago.

On Friday, news of the program’s end had yet to reach most Anaheim schools. Once students learn about it, they will be crestfallen, local educators said.

“It was something sixth graders look forward to all school year,” said Disney Elementary Principal Regina Ford.

With schools fully reopening, students “are hoping everything is back to normal, and they’re very excited,” Ford said. “It’s going to be heartbreaking to tell the kids.”

A Disneyland Resort official called it a business decision following the year-long COVID19-related closure of Disneyland and California Adventure theme parks. “As a result of the pandemic, we had to make many difficult decisions related to our business and unfortunately ending this program was one of them.”

The Disney official noted that the company has “a long history of supporting Anaheim schools and kids,” citing a bevy of programs and donations. She also said the company will be offering in the future new opportunities for schools and non-profits to earn tickets.<<

Glad to hear from you!

Shame they ended this program, and especially at WDE; it seemed like a nice show of goodwill for Anaheim families. It wasn't like it really hurt their bottom line; from a quick Google search, there's around 2500 kids per class, and I'm sure a percentage don't complete the community service to get the ticket. Moreover, I'd imagine that in order for the kids to redeem it, their parents would have to purchase tickets too.

Glad to see you again. Curious to hear your thoughts on Disney Genie.

One of the reasons I didn't post here after I returned in July was my inside info on multiple issues theme park related, and not just Disney stuff. Besides, too much other stuff going on in my life.

I like Disney Genie, an advanced version of Touring Plans with upsells.

As for Genie+, well, mixed feelings, sucks, but with all the additional costs operating in California, plus the pandemic costs, I think many folks could see something like it coming.

My biggest worry will be the abuse of the ADA program of return times.

Maybe Disney will join this program.

Thanks for hearing your thoughts. Since you mentioned East coast parks. As an East coast resident, I'm about to make a few posts on the Miscellaneous Thoughts thread where I share some fond and interest memories on some East Coast Parks that I visited years ago (Dutch Wonderland. Storybook Land in Egg Harbor, Sesame Place, and Six Flags Great Adventure). Hope you check these posts out eventually since I rarely hear discussions about some of them.

This is just sad.

It seems current TDA and Burbank leaders know no bounds on how to untether Disneyland from its cultural mooring posts. No tradition is sacred, no cultural norm is respected, no folksy habit from yesteryear is safe if it doesn't now pencil out.

Why do I get the feeling we won't be seeing a Candlelight Ceremony again?

You will. They'll close the park and charge for it.....and charge the choral groups.

That really leave a bad taste in Disney. I’m disappointed of their action to no longer offer this program.

Kids have had it the absolute hardest during the past year and a half. All of the routine and stability that they need to thrive and feel safe and secure has been taken away from them. On top of that having to be isolated from friends and family for long periods of time. Way to keep piling on the crap for the kids in your own backyard Disney. I hope they get lots of negative backlash for this and someone else steps in and gets these kids tickets to Disneyland.
